In about a month I should have my pistol permit and I want to buy a gun for EDC. I am interested in the glock 27 or the 26. I also like the 1911 style 45. and I like the fact that you can realy customise them. All in all I would just like to know what you guys think. What do you carry and why? What do you think I should buy? The only thing I don't want is a wimpy little pocket pistol. I know that a full sized 45. is a little large for EDC. But what about the kimber carry models? Thanks for the help.

Buy yourself a Glock 27. The ".40" is a very good "fight stopper" (155 grain Federal JHP), and the little "27" carries very easily. There is also the slightly larger Glock model 23 to take a look at too.

That is actually the gun I have been considering. I like the size and the fact that it has very good accuracy right out of the box. I also would feel more comfortable with the 40. rather than the 9mm. I probably will end up getting all three but it is just a question of witch to buy first.

"A knife is only as sharp as the person who uses it."

Same with guns. We have club members with Desert Eagles who, under stress, can't hit the proverbial broad side of a barn door and I have friends, plain clothes, who can lobotomize a gnat at 120 yards with a Taurus .22 revolver.

(I carry a "tuned" Glock 19 with Trijicon night sights in a Galco holster)

With the right leather (Milt Sparks VersaMaxII) you can comfortably conceal a full size Government model Colt, or a Commander. Glocks are good too. Main thing, get a good holster and a good, stiff belt.

Boy, what a can of worms you just opened up. ;)

Picking a handgun for protection is very personal choice; complicated by your own daily habits, environment, and shooting skills.

Those of you who know me know that I've collected, carried, shot alot of handguns--easily 100 or more different styles, sizes, and calibers. I am a 1911 fan too, and love shooting and gunsmithing them.

That being said, my vote is for the Glock 26 (9mm) or 27 (.40S&W), or their slightly larger siblings the Glock 19 (9mm) or 23 (.40S&W).

What do I carry/use for personal protection? In a word--Glock. Glock 26 for CCW, Glock 17 or 23 for home, Glock 20 for the backcountry. (Oddly enough, I do not own any .45-caliber Glocks--probably cause I have so damn many 1911's already.)

Why? Because I've done enough shooting to know I shoot Glocks well under stress. Have I fumbled over a 1911-safety under the stress of competition--heck yes. Have I fumbled over a Glock safety--never, there is none. See my point? Additionally, Glocks are reliable as hell, more accurate than you are, unbelievably durable & corrosion-resistant, lightweight, and relatively inexpensive--a very tough combination to beat.

Do I like to shoot handguns other than Glock? You betcha. Will I occasionally carry or use other handguns for protection? Sure, variety is the spice of life. But when the adrenaline dumps, my first preferrence is Glock.

BTW, click here to read a thread entitled "Recommend Handgun?" over at USN.

You guys have been very helpfull. I think i am gonna get the 27. I would like to mention that i am nowhere near a newbie when it comes to shooting. It is a hobbie I have had since I was around 11 with my dad. I realy like the glocks but I am also partial to the 1911 and would still like more info on good brands. I have heard good things about Kimber but don't know too much. Also who makes a good comfortable holster for the 27.

I like the Fobus paddle for my G27 and G23. Some will say that they are junk and you have to get a Sidearmor, but I like the paddle feature for quick on/off. I have found that it is secure, comfortable, and is holding up well. - Lee

While I am a huge Glock fan, and carry them when appropriate, I'd also like to point out the S&W 342PD Airlite revolver, and its kin. This is a gun so small and light that you can easily always have it with you. But it's not an underpowered pocket pistol, even though it fits in your pocket quite neatly. Furthermore, it has no safeties to fumble with, and you can fire it inside your pocket if need be.

Just something to think about.

Roger that! I'm a big fan of the airweight style Bodyguard/Centennial style hammerless S&W's, I think I have 4 if you count the 'loaner's'...good choice, and they work. (Just locktight the sideplate screws and ejection rod...they can come loose under recoil, binding the cylinder).

BTW, we were up in your neck of the woods over the weekend, 3 days in New Westminster/Vancouver, 2 on the Island...beautiful eh? ;)

I talked with the USCS/CCS guys, then with our folks when I got back...we have 5 'systems' up there now, with 3 more going online soon. I asked to have a crack at supporting them, and it's a go down here, (sure beats South Texas this time of year!) So, hopefully we can hook up one of these times when I head north...I'd love to become your neighbor...lol

Back to .38's, +P is a plus (pun), but not necessary...

well its true w/the right leather ya can conceal >>>>>well anything - BUT the darn thing will get heavy, if ya carry it 24/7.

i carry a glock 33 which is the same as a 27 its just .357SIG, when i got it, and its larger brother the 32C, DPS in tx had just adopted the .357SIG, and i thought what the heck, ya only have to swap the bbl to .40 to change so WTF? but am happy w/the 357 round, other than a lot of muzzle blast. accurate, recoil not too bad, didnt think it kicked at all but shot a 26 w/std 115 federals then shot my 33, and wow it does.

but i think the glock is best for EDC because:

it is lighter than the competition - it makes a diff if ya carry 24/7

it has an excellent finish which is very scratch proof/resistant - i havent hardly scratched mine, and i throw it around everywhere, usually carry it IWB, sometimes w/no holster, throw it in the glove box, a great finish i tell ya

excellent reliability - i have put about 3K thru my 32C and about 4K thru my 33 w/no zero nada jam - cant complain about that! no special maintanance either

good ergos - the thing just fits my hand well, even the smaller 33

great trigger - was used to either a SIG P220 or a 1911, and at first the glock trigger was FUNKY, but, once ya get used to it, it rocks - resets very fast for me, and i shoot it well too, really impressed my brother in law last week at the range!

ya dont need to customise the glock like a 1911 - sure its fun, but it is cheaper to have a good pistol right out of the box imho, and ya do w/the glock, not true w/all pistols

just a great gun, ya just have to be a little carefull when ya carry it w/out a holster due to no manual safety, but not a big deal.

they are also priced fairly right, at least compared to SIG and colt

that said i do sometimes (very rarely) carry either a kel tech P32 or a PPK .32 when its just not possible to conceal a glock, even the 33 (jogging in the texas summer, when at the pool in swimsuit, etc, sometimes ya just cant conceal anything else, and for those times, w/practice, the P32 really carries well - hard to shoot though, but not impossible, at least at short ranges, and priced right too, also very reliable, no jams yet w/mine, about 300 rnds so far - i carry glasers in the kel tech and ranger 125 JHP in the glocks.....

Glock 27. .40S&W 135grain Corbons. Low flash, recoil, 96 per cent one shot stop. Bianchi Pancake holster...nice and comfy. Night sights. this a very comfortable rig to wear. Don't forget the plus one extension on the mag. Makes for a better grip and one extra round can't hurt. Sometimes I forget I am wearing it.

For what it is worth. I have carried mostly the.45acp in the 1911 configuration for many years. I also carried the Glock 21 in 45 for awhile. I currently carry one of three handguns with me, depending on weather and clothing option. Sig220, Springfield 1911, or Kahr K40. To be honest, the Kahr is the weapon I choose most nowadays.
In years gone by I chose my old Glock 21 because it held 13 rounds of 45acp. Well I am a good enough shot that I now realise that I do not need 13 shots. As my back/hip degenerates more with years I find I want a lightish handgun with punch. Thus enters the Kahr. Great for concealed carry. No hammers or safetys to catch on a quick draw. It packs a punch in a small package. I feel that it seems smaller than the equivelent Glock due to the single stack design, and the use of steel instead of polymers. This has worked well for me. As mentioned earlier, GOOD LEATHER, will make the carry better also.
Hope you find what works for you. Carry handguns and carry knives seem to be one of those personal things that you have to experience for yourself and make your own decisions. Suggestions from others are nice, BUT you are the deciding factor.

Personally, I'd say that the best carry pistol is the H&K P7 series. However, they are a bit on the expensive side. But, if you can afford it, they are very nice. Should have my P7M13 in a few days :)

I considered saving up some more and getting a P7M10 (.40S&W, instead of the 9mm that the -M13 eats), but I decided that if 14 rounds of 9mm won't stop some mugger, I'm just gonna start running and hope he trips on a rock or something :)

How 'bout a Beretta? 92 in 9mm, or a 96 in .40. That's what I'm looking at. I've ALWAYS loved those guns, and if it's good enough for all our armed forces, it's damn good enough for me too! :D Proven, reliable gun.

Glock 19. Little better sight radius than 26. E-mail me for further info if interested.

dr jones,

great gun. only problem is during summer. all of a sudden the big iron, like the sig 226 becomes very hard to hide.

don't want to scare any of the civilians, right?
