Hey guys, I got my brand new Coote set up the other day (1.5hp, w/step pulley), and it came with a black 120grit belt. It worked ok for messing around and trying things out, but it didn't last long.

What grits and brands of belts are good for starting out, and where can I get them? I've heard that the Norton Blaze are good. I need some belts that are pretty long lasting and newb friendly.

Also... the black 120grit belt didn't lay really flat against the platen.... it was bowed outward. Like convexed. Is that normal for belts to do that, or do I have a platen/tension problem?

usaknifemaker is where I got my belts. I own a coote also, how do you mean convex? Width wise across the 2" or length wise? A picture if you can get one would help. What is your setup, what size wheel and idler wheel are you using?

It's width wise. Its like the tension on the grinder isn't getting it tight enough and it's not laying perfectly flat. The sides are touching the platen and the middle is pooched out.

I blame the belt. i soaked it in warm water and it straightened it out slightly...Maybe better belts will be flatter.

I have the 10inch wheel. The grinder is new from Norm with no modifications.

Lately I have been using ceramic belts from www.supergrit.com
I've been getting good wear, and the belts cut the steel quickly, without a lot of heat building up. The best thing is they are priced right to.

Norton Blaze is all I have to say, except I start with 60 -80 -120 - 220 and I give up and hand sand, I just dont have the touch,, although I pulled out a norton 350 trizack this weekend and did some damage, I may add that to my lineup. BTW I use 2x+ of the 60, due to heavy removal, so I typically order in the combination of 4 60 for every 1 each of the finer grits.
