Need true combat Busse for Recon Marine....

A serious question for serious combat-knife enthusiasts:

My son will be completing Marine Corps Reconnaissance School in about 4 months....I would like to get him a Busse knife for his combat carry-knife outside the wire.....

Ideal specs:

1) 6" non-reflective INFI blade with high-penetration point geometry......

2) 11" - 11.5" overall length....

3) NOT .25" thick.....something between .18" and .22" thickness for rapid use, lighter weight and better quickness......

In looking over the various models, those that strike my eye as being closest to these spec's is the Satin Jack TAC, possibly the HellRazor, maybe the Jackhammer.....

Any other suggestions or pic's of these models or other models would be most appreciated!

The current model offered on the Busse website (Tank Buster) meets all of these spec's except the thickness.....appears to be .25" thick.....

Also, on the Tank Buster, if ordered with the heavy swedge, can the 2" or so of swedged tip be sharpened to true, cutting edge? This would improve stabbing-penetration considerably!

Thanks much, guys!

The combat grade Tank Buster is .25" thick due to the blade coating. Underneath is should be around .22". IMHO, the weight added due to the blade coating should be negligible.

The Satin Jack TAC and the Badger Attack TAC (5" blade) should work well also. The Badger might be a better option as it is more compact and would take up less space being carried. It is more of a utilitarian blade, which is probably what he would mostly be using a knife for. Both of these can be found on the exchange right now for close to their original prices.

Edit to add: The Jack Hammer is pretty much a Satin Jack Tac variant. While the specs are similar to each other, the Jack Hammer felt heavier/clunky to me. This was mainly due to the mag handle scales. If you're looking for something slim/streamlined, you may also consider purchasing any of the above mentioned knives with regular style handle scales.

The 3 you mentioned are good ones....as well as Pure Bred Fighter 6, or 8 inch and the HG 55.

CombatDad,
For pics of the knives in question, Google search "Busse Combat"; select "The Busse Collector"; click "Catalogue": look for the knife that you want to view then click the model (NOTE: For a non-reflective blade, you'll want CG or Combat Grade versions.) To buy, search the Busse exchange here at Blade Forums. Good luck to you finding the perfect blade and best of luck to your brave young son. Recon Marines are very tough men. A Busse knife would be a good tool for him.

The PBS's were all 1/4" at least. Mine were really stocky, but wicked sharp.

I was also thinking about the Desert Jack.

You might want to take a look at the Scrap Yard S5 (Scrapper 5), it's a Busse-kin knife.

About 10" overall, light, comfortable, and .18" thick.

One of the members on Scrap Yard Forum is sending these out to our troops.

Of all the brands out there. Definately Go with Busse, Swamp rat or Scrap yard. you can stake your life on there quality

All the ones mentioned above are great. SJtac, Hell Razor, batac, even the Skinny Ash1 are great choices and all will do the job. The best deal is usually buying what is at the Busse home page. Sometimes they have knives that maybe don't fill the job description of what is needed, but in this case, the Tank Buster really should suit the bill just fine. A Recon Marine is going to need a combat knife, that is good for utility and doing what has to be done close in. The tank buster with mag handles and a spec ops sheath should fill the bill. good luck,
I know your a proud dad, my son's a Marine too and there is no accomplishment he could do in life that I would be prouder in him than wear the Anchor Globe and Eagle.

3B2s are nice, definitely second place in the mid-size range for me. I honestly prefer Razors. I have used them heavily and found them to be the perfect compromise - not the best fighter, chopper, stabber, or slicer, but better in all of these than most Busse models I have personally used.

They are cheap and easy to find. If you have trouble finding one come back in about a week and there should be several when I get my sale going.

Welcome to BladeForums and the Busse world.

Sounds like you have done your homework, the three you mentioned will fit the bill, sizewise. The Jack Hammer is bare metal, but some Gun Kote could fix that. There is also the Mole Jack, an all black version of the Satin Jack TAC. If cost is a concern, the JH is the least expensive of the three.

The swedge could be sharpened on the Tank Buster, you might be able to have the Shop do it before they ship it.

My suggestion would be to call Busse, ask for Jerry or Garth. They have a lot of experience supplying knives for military service, and might have other ideas for you.

The first time I went to the sandbox I was under the "need a combat knife" spell to. It seems that people think that the soldiers are going to be in one on one close combat with terrorists and have to pull out their trusty fixed blade to plunge it in the neck of some combative. Truth is this.
1. Your son is going to be issued a firearm(s), a very good first choice.
2. The only thing he will ever kill with this knife is time. ( or bugs, snakes....)
3. Small or big any knife in trained hands can be used for self defense.
4. He will use a multi tool more than anything.
5. Something small would be much better to carry on gear as there is allot of stuff and not allot of space.

If I were going back I would probably bring something small like the AD. I don't know how well your son knows how to sharpen a knife but if hes not that good at it then something with serrations. Good choice looking at Busse though.

Please tell your son congratulations and thank you for your service. I'll drink one for him tonight.

All good choices. Out of every knife I own, if it was me I would probably take a CG BATAC or SJTAC.

I'll second the Scrapper 5 suggestion; they're through-hardened SR101 and feel great in the hand. Of the INFI you mentioned, I'd go for a Jackhammer (and send it off to Up-Armored for coating) or the Satin Jack.

my son was in the first assualt on iraq with the marine corp, he spent about 8 months over there and had a regular kabar and traded it for two cartons of smokes.
your son is a well trained marine, being a recon, my son was support for the recons going in and they are a great bunch.

you have picked the right knife company to deal with, busse combat knives are the best and i have been collecting knives for about 30 years now, go by what resinrib said and you will not go wrong.

i would add a spyderco, emerson, microtech half serrated folder and the multi tool thing as well.

I've called the shop on several knives that I've ordered and requested that a penetrator tip be ground onto it... which is basically a mini swedge. I'd imagine that if you wanted it swedged further they'd be able to accommodate you, they are absolutely great when it comes to customer service.
