Need true combat Busse for Recon Marine....

Combat Grade Tank Busters are 0.25" thck if they are coated, but if you order one with double cut finish (no coating but also non reflective) - the knife will be 0.22 thick (that's what the site states).

Wouldn't it be most appropriate to give him a Tali Whacker?

Tight units like Recon usually have a favorite piece of equipment within their unit and other brands that are too "John Wayne". I might ask him what knife he wants. A Busse will be hard to beat.

Gents,

I really appreciate all of your comments and suggestions!

I think I will go with a somewhat lighter, smaller knife than what I had originally proposed. Carry-space on his vest and gear will be limited and weight/length considerations come into play.....

Now I'm thinking 4"-5" blade, .18" thickness.....I really liked the blade shape/handle-configuration/SR-101 steel of the Scrap Yard Scrapper 5....and at $100/each, if he loses it somehow, I can easily replace....

Also like the Fehrman Peace Maker.....only 7 ounces, 8.5" length, 4" blade and heck of a reputation (like Busse) as a TOUGH, high-quality knife....looks to be about midway between a Busse and Scrap Yard in price....

I don't have to decide immediately, so I'll keep pondering for awhile....

Thanks again for your well-wishes for my son!

How about a badger? My absolute favorite camp knife and most used Busse is a clip point anorexic badger attack. 4.5" blade, nice and thin, light, extremely handy and agile.

I would recommend an ETS (embrace the suck) SJTAC. The ETS model has a 6.5" blade, a skull crusher pommel and an OAL of 12". Thickness is about .18". The blade is narrower than the steel hearts and hell razors and makes a good thrusting weapon. I'm not military but carry this knife for protection in cougar/bear country.

Fehrman's a good choice and readily available...which is key. I'd rather have a Busse but all the knives mentioned are only available on the secondary market, except for the Tankbuster which don't really fit the specs. My recommendation was the SR Desert Jack, but good luck finding one.

I like my Scrapper 5 a lot...The SS4 is sweet too! That will run higher...just heads up on the 5, it's been released, but you might try emailing to see if any are laying around...that or the BF here and it will cost 20-30 more...

In that size range with a pommel is the Meaner...cool looking blade and still light.

I swear this knife feels so good.... You'de think you could take a Grizzly with this bad boy!!

Fusion Steel Heart (Heavy Heart at .27)..... Bigger than needed, but this would do it all!

A 6" .22 thick blade will be heavier than you probably think. The clip point ABA is great, but it is going to be expensive. A good lighter weight option is a High Street - smaller than what you are looking for, but has a nice clip point that you can send to someone (busse, or someone like Horton) to sharpen the spine like you asked.

Really, and lots of folks do this, is just buy about 4 or 5 of the ones you are thinking about, hold them in your hand, and sell the ones you don't want to keep. If you just watch the for sale Busse forum, and keep track of typical prices, you'll probably break even or close to it - maybe lose some on shipping or something, but it will take the guess work out and you'll get exactly what you are looking for.

One last thought, and this is my opinion, is to make sure it has a rear talon hole, and hole behind the choil so you can put in a D guard (most do though, but not all). This will protect your hands from sliding down the handle if you stab something hard. Better than slicing your hand open.

Skinny Ash1 would be my vote. The handle shape is super secure. I dig them. But I just go "combat" camping, so my vote won't carry much weight.

3) NOT .25" thick.....something between .18" and .22" thickness for rapid use, lighter weight and better quickness......

if you get a satin or dc finish the blade is .22'' on Tank Buster i think. .25'' with a coated blade.
