I have rehandled a couple of axes and hawks, but this one just keeps getting loose. That is quite a shame, since I like it very much.

My guess is that the head is a bit too slim overall, providing only minimal contact surface between the eye and the handle. I also feel that it is making the head more prone to be pried off by the force of the impact during chopping.

What do you think?

I would try leaving more haft sticking out the top about 2 inches, use ash or hickory for the new haft and put a wider wedge in with epoxy. Bring the wide wedge right to the top of the haft overhang. I think Beech is too brittle to do a 2 inch overhang.
