Hello all,

I'm slowly in the process if building the NWGS (No-Weld Grinder Sander) from Midwest Knifemakers supply and am looking for a motor.

I am not affiliated with them, just posting the link for those who don't know what it is. But I do have to give them a very good recommendation.

Wayne Goddard talks about using a motor from a washer/dryer in his book $50 Knife Shop. Would a dryer motor be suitable for this type of application? The reason I ask is I may have a lead on a used Dryer for really cheap (free) but don't have access to tear in to it yet to see what the motor looks like.

I've been looking for a used/rebuilt motor locally and haven't been able to find one yet (plenty of new ones) so I'm looking at alternatives.

Thanks,

Charlie

The plans call for a 1.5 HP motor, I have two that I stripped from washing machines and they're both only .5 HP. I use one on a meat grinder and it bogs down pretty easily and overheats after about fifteen minutes. Hey, for free, it's worth giving it a shot! You may not be able to hog off lots of steel at once, but it may be a stepping stone.

my $.02

Appreciate the info. I was wondering if they were very strong. They're certainly not very big.

Guess I'll keep looking around some more.

Thanks,

Charlie

Charlie, you need to keep looking you really need something that is 1.5 horse and above, if not you will be under powered. If you where going to be direct drive you might be able to get away with it.

I remember a motor place that was cheap, I will search for it and get back with you.

Keep looking in the meantime.

If there are any in Cleveland, check with Electric Motor repair shops(or maybe in Chattanooga)
They often have unclaimed rebuilt, or decent used stuff. Might be worth a call

Charlie,
I have a 1 hp Baldor 1725 rpm that was original equipment on my Burr King.
Frame 56C. It is only available because I changed out my single speed to variable speed motors on my grinders. It isn't new but hasn't got a ton of hours on it either....
the color is Burr King green....( no, not John Deere green like in that song).
If you are interested, I'll make you a deal you won't be able to turn down.

If you can use it, good, if not, just post or e-mail me.

I've called around to all of them locally and they have new ones but nothing withing the price range I can afford right now. I'll keep checking back with them though. Never know when something will show up.

Thanks,

Charles
