Hey Kershaw pros! I'm getting stuff together to build a needs work for a christmas gift and I was wondering if anyone has replaced the back spacer with stand-offs. If so, where did you get them, or what size are they?

I am going to be putting blaze orange scales on this one, and I think having stand-offs instead of the back spacer would look sweet.

I was also trying to think of something to do to the liners and blade and pocket clip, but I'm not sure what I want to do, other than maybe just polishing them. I just saw some in the pic thread with a splashy, acid etched thing on the blades, and that might be something I'd be interested in doing, so any info on that would be awesome.

This knife is for my brother, who just recently started showing some interest in sharp stuff, so I really hope this one turns out well and he likes it.

Thanks for any help!

I forget what size they are exactly, but I get my standoffs from knifekits and just grind them down to the right thickness. I'll measure them later when I get the chance, they're the same width as the backspacer of course.

Almost forgot to measure last night. They come in right about 0.149" - 0.150".

Thanks. I measured my knife and came up with right at .160 between the liners, but I didn't take it apart. I have one that came with g10 on it from Kershaw, so I'll wait until I get the actual knife I'll be modding to order standoffs.

I received the project knife yesterday, and got it torn apart. It had been a while since I was inside of one of the assisted kershaws, and I didn't think about making space under the scales for the torsion bar, and for the hex side of the pivot.

I'm planning on cutting all of this with a square end mill. Is this what all of you guys that are building scales do? Any tips/hints/tricks anyone wants to share would be greatly appreciated!

Thanks again for the help so far!

Thats what I use along with a router attachment or a drill press locked so I can move the scale after I scribe/ mark it. We need a pic when you are done!

You could heat color the pocket clip also!

You could stone wash the blade, put it in a bottle with small rounded rocks, add a little water and a tad bit of soap and start shaking, and then shake more and more. You will have to sharpen it after that of course.
Then you could take some 800 grit or finer sand paper to the pocket clip in one direction and make it a satin finish. thats what I did to this clip.

Ive tried to polish a blade before and it was more work than I thought, i even tried a buffing wheel. Ive spent a few hours working on it and I am not done still.

Are the pocket clips titanium? Or do they just get the colored oxidization on it like any steel that gets heated up?

stainless, it'll turn a light tan color when torched like what I did to my CB Shallot (at least, that's the color I settled at):

Yes what gooeytek said. This is how mine turned out. I just posted it in another thread today. Has a blueish purple tint that just won't show up in the pics.

Well, I finally got all of my stuff in and started on the scales. I have to start over on the spring side scale, because I accidentally milled all the way through it in a spot while I was cutting the relief for the spring. I'm glad I got two sets of scales, but I'm a bit gun shy now to start again. Lol

You just got the mess up out of the way, now you will be golden!

Here are a couple of pics of this thing. It's getting close to being finished. I still need to round off the corners on the scales and try to figure out a way to get my dirty finger prints off of the textured surface of the scale.

This has been a pretty interesting project. I under estimated it quite a bit from the beginning . I pretty much figured that it was just going to be drill a few holes, sand the edges smooth and call it a day. It was quite a bit more than that.

I learned a lot on this one, and my next set should come out better and faster, but I'm still a long way from where I want to end up.

Thanks again for the help and for following along. I'll post pics once it's all finished.

That looks nice! When are you gonna make another set? :) You could also polish the blade to make it sort of sterile, like I did to this brown one (I think I gave this away):

That looks pretty cool with the stuff polished off of the blade.

I haven't decided what knife I'll mod next' but it'll probably be one without a spring under the scale. Lol. I got a set of camo g10 scales when I picked up the orange ones, they may look cool on my cb jyd.

Well, its all boxed up and ready to go to my brother tomorrow. I'm pretty nervous about giving it to him, but I'm pretty sure he'll like it even if he doesn't understand what exactly happened to it.

I said that I would post some pics when it was done, but they're the same as the last ones. Lol

Thanks again for following along.

thanks for the kind words. My brother got it today and he seemed pretty excited about it , but I'm not sure he really understood that I had done anything to it. Lol. Oh well, as long as he uses it and doesn't lose it or brake it , I'm happy. Lol
