Negative experience w/ Spyderco @ Blade

I also left the booth with a bad taste. I was inquiring about having my endura resharpened. When I told them the knife was sent back to me new as a warrenty replacement with a notch in the ricasso, and that I was told this knife would not be warranted again. (fine with me) The lady behind the booth started to question me and to tell me this was not the way things were done. She went on to ask other people behind the booth if they had ever herd of what I had explained. I was told my knife was a ''second''. I didn't buy a second or have I ever had one or even ever seen one for sale. I was then given a number to call and told they might help me. I have been buying Spyderco knives since 1994 and own 4 right now. This response surprised me and is very different from my last dealing with them 5 years ago. I have no reason to lie and don't like being treated like I am.

Hi Moonwilson,

Sorry for your bad experience. I must say it is not our way. We have an excellent crew that is friendly and helpful.

The staff that was there was: Kelly, our sales manager, Joyce, Spyderco's marketing & Public Relations manager, Kristi ("Tazkristi"), Ed Schempp, my wife Gail, my son Eric and me. Hard to imagine who might have been rude?

We spoke with hundreds of people at the show. As far I know, they were all positive experiences.

The no picture policy is for "concept models". When people want to take pictures of prototypes, we usually take them out of the case and put them on the counter so they can be shot.

We don't like to permit pics of "concept models" because there is no assurance that the model will be built or that it will look the same if they are built. Often there are modifications we make as a result of input at shows.

If pics of "concept models" do get out, we get phone calls and questions our sales staff do not have answers for. We also have competitors that like to copy our designs and so we keep our concept models under wraps.

If anyone was rude to you, you have my, and everyone elses apology. I'm sure there was no negative intention.

Perhaps we will have opportunity to make amends in the future.

sal

Thanks Sal, I really appreciate your kind words. No hard feelings. I remain a die-hard supporter. I apologize for any negativity I brought into this thread.

All the best.

Andy

I don't mean to drag the company through the mud over this. By all accounts and from past personal experience, Spyderco is a great company, I'm sure this was just an isolated incident. It really ticked me off, though.
.............good perspective. ;)

Sometimes its best to cut the other guy some slack, as you don't know what he/she has been thru that day too.

And if the other person is a true Weenie, the Good Book says that your kindness to them "heaps burning coals" on their head.

So either way you are covered.

Hi Drift Draft.

I don't think that anyone is saying that you are lying. 2nds are sold only at the factory during our factrory sale. They are marked with a notch on the spine. They are sold very inexpensively, so normal warrantees are waived. you should not have received the knife as a "new" knife. Did you get the knife from Spyderco?

sal

I sent in a knife I bought for $55 from a sporting store when the handle broke. I recieved a knife with a notch and was told this was normal after one replacement. I'm wasn't trying to get somthing for nothing. I was simply trying to get some edge work done which I thought would be no problem. I know it was hot in there on friday and that humidity works on the nerves. I as well mean to bring no negativity to this thread. Thanks for the response Sal. Ted

Oh, check here for an excellent explanation with pictures on what a factory second is, and how to spot it.

Dear Moonwilson,

Hi- I'm Joyce at Spyderco and want to add to Sal's post. My apologies if you were offended or insulted by me or anyone from Spyderco. That is never our intention and never will be. Everyone at the show we call our friends and the people we don't, are simply the people we've not met yet- but will.

I hope we have the chance to welcome you in the future.

Joyce,
I was at your booth for a few minutes looking at all the knives and noticed that the two women behind the counter were taking the time to engage all the people around me in a very professional manner. One man was showing the woman next to him a knife and one of the woman behind the counter offered the man's friend a trainer knife to handle because she appeared to be a bit afraid of knives.
Good work.
I don't think one bad experience deserves to be noted here - just my opinion. As a person I wouldn't like to be judged by one mistake I may or may not have made (what might be even preceived as a mistake).

I don't even own a Spyderco product - Kershaw, Buck and Victronix so far.

Hi Ted,

I can see why there was confusion,. It is just not our ppoicy to ship 2nds. Must have been one of the people in customer service that was new or didn't know.

If you have any problems with the knife, and you have to send it in, please call this question to my attention.

Well, I too tried to take a picture of the prototype knives, primarily because I have seen proto pictures on this forum. Eric kind of jumped on me before I took the picture but in hindsight I think this was a speed thing to stop me from taking the picture (which it did.) I felt stupid but I was so busy looking at knives I never did see the sign. I would rather see the protos with no pics than not at all. It was very hot back in the Spyderco corner and I must say that had to have contributed to everyone's mood. Having said that Sal was busy the first two times I went by. The third time however, Sal dropped everything to sign an autograph, take a picture, and talk to me briefly. I felt like I was bothering him and said so. He stated something to the effect of "nonsense that is why I am here...for you." Kristi was obviously uncomfortable (due to heat as was I) but quite friendly in her mischievous sort of way the three times I talked to her. I must add that it was my first Blade and they had never met me before. Moral......While I was at first bummed, I left very happy. Thanks Sal and Crew.

Hi Sal. I understand where you're coming from when you say that you don't want pictures of the "concept models" leaked onto the internet. But for us poor fools (spyderco fans) who live in areas no where near a city that hosts a knife show, is there any other alternative than to hope that some photos of upcoming "concepts" will be leaked onto the spyderco forums?

Hiya SpydiEye,

The photos that Spyderco allows to be shown are prototypes that are definately going to be sold (baring unforeseen circumstances such as with the Spydiefly).

The pictures that they don't want shown on the net are the ones that might not get sold or will go through several changes before being sold. Spyderco uses the show to get opinions from their dealers and anyone lucky enough to go to the knife shows. They often listen to opinions and the knife changes.

I wondered the same thing until the first time I saw a knock-off Spyderfly for $25 at a gun show locally. All it takes is a picture for someone to make CCC knives.

Customer service works both ways. Got to be respectful to the sales reps to gain respect in return. Its impolite to take pics without permission, should have at least asked. taking pics without permission is disrepectful and whats more theres a sign, i would be pissed if i were her.

For a "die-hard supporter" you made 1436 viewers read you trashing spyderco. :thumbdn:

I'd bet all or most of the 1436 viewers were surprised that Spyderco was anything but patient and amicable to all. I was.

Spyderco has a reputation of being being fair and friendly with ELU's. Mr Glesser even brings that warmth to the forums as he admonished all to leave 'shiny footprints' as to make the forums a welcome place for discussion, good or bad, about all aspects of Spyderco knives. Mr Glesser, Ms. Laituri, Eric Glesser and 'Tazkristi' all practice such. The 'die-hard supporters' do the same, keeping discussions civil. With that, I must say Spyderco is a company of the most integrity, all shown in this 'shiny' thread. The point of all this.....Spyderco keeps surprising me after all these years.
