My wife asked me recently what the biggest blade I could make for the budget minded was....well this is it.
Hand forged and then rough ground and taken straight to heat treating. This blade is no frills but is one mean bitch. Her 14.5 inch 5160 fully heat treated blade is a full quarter inch in the spine and flat ground to a dangerously sharp convex edge. Weighing in at 2lbs 10oz she is heavy for her size but when your splitting wood or skulls that's an advantage.
Her handle is an ultra simple full tang wrapped in two layers of military 550 cord. The first layer is 10ft long layed in a self retaining serving. The second layer is 20ft back wrapped and terminated in a lanyard which with some purposeful picking can be unwound without cutting to provide you with 20ft of rope for building snares or shelters or deconstructed even further into it's constituent filaments giving you 140ft of fishing line or trip wire.... And with the base layer of cord still in place you still have a comfortable sure gripping handle.
$250. Shipped insured with leather sheath.

and...
My latest work in progress. A classic 10" Bowie. This beautiful specimen is hand forged 5160. Differentially heat treated her leading and trailing edges are both hardened to 60 Rockwell with a spring tempered core. The hamon (temper lines) are clearly visible and both beautify and offer testimony of her creation methods. This blade is currently unclaimed and awaiting an owner to decide what kind of handle and guard she will wear. Personally I think she belongs in stainless with a sambar stag crown... but will let buyer decide.
$475 Finished, with leather sheath and shipped. (Price does not include any exotic/$$$ materials)
