Thing is, many of the Paiute elders I met were very polite, part of their cultural mores that one gave the other his full attention and listened until the other was finished speaking. They displayed humility and tolerance towards others. ( Pala is much like this. )

But they always maintained their dignity throughout. Their politeness was to allow others that same dignity they possessed.

It was not subservience.

I hope this conveys what I want to say.
