Craig, I'm glad that you're going to be able to make the trip to Nepal. I hope you'll take lots of pictures to share with us. I think I speak for most other forumites when I say that we'd really enjoy seeing assorted photos of the shop and kamis who produce our khukuris. It would also be interesting to see the surroundings in which the shop is located.

Speaking of the shop, how many kamis are presently employed, and where exactly is the shop located? What impact has the downsizing of Britain's Gorkha forces had on the operation, considering that it is the supplier of the military-issue khukuris?

Steven,

Thanks for your well-wishing. When I go, I will definitely take hoards of pictures - all for forumite consumption. As for the shop, you can visit my website and see some pictures in the Shop Photos section.

As for the answers to your questions about the shop - I understand from Lalit that he operates a sort of "Kami Cooperative" in Dharan, an hour flight from Kathmandu. When I visit, I'll post detailed information and even photos of the kamis. I especially want to meet the ones who produce the metal-handled khukuris, as I find that the blades on those babies are the cream of the crop.

Funny - as I am writing this post, I got a call from one of my most "selective" customers (blems need not apply!), who ordered a 15 inch Sirupati and one of two wooden handled bhojpures I got in stock - he has yet to learn the beauty of the brass handled khukuris
