I've been trying to find information on Nepal. A word-search (Nepal) netted 433 entries, mostly tourist sites, trekking outfitters, and the ever-faithful CIA analysis (we actually _paid_ for this?). A word-search on "Khukuri" gave up 743 hits (mostly forum postings

) with mucho information on the blades.
My problem is, that as an old railroader and traffic man, I need to start with a map. Uncle Bill's pics of his trip and itenerary indicate he traveled more or less west from Kathmandu, but none of the maps on the web are road maps, and none show Benape, Surya Benai or other useful reference points - HELP!!!

Walosi,
You might want to try a sight at www.thesun.org . It's a sight for embassy workers, expats, etc. and has info on just about anyplace. Once on the sight, go to 'Real Post Reports', 'Asia' and then in the city section, 'Katmandu, Nepal'. They have a couple of maps there, as well as some info about Nepal. Surya Benai is not listed on any of their maps, either, but it's so small it probably isn't on any map outside the subcontinent. There are also some pics of BirGorka and the surrounding area in the forum archives.

Matt:
Thanks for the URL - the maps are about par for the course, but the comments (especially the wife, about her kids, "intestinal difficulties" and head lice could have been written by my Sis about many of the places she and her bunch lived during 30 years in the Army. They have a nice place in Florida now, but she still hunts snakes with a sjambok. Takes a particular kind of woman

Uncle Bill:
I did find one "political map" which showed more towns and cities than any other so far - If you ever seriously try to get Yvsa to go over, be sure to tell him about Tulsipur (about 250 klicks west of Kathmandu) and Okhaldhunga, to the east. Should make an old Okie feel more at home

I've not found any really decent maps of Nepal on the net. You almost have to buy some trekking maps to get good detail. National Geograpic has some good detailed maps of various sections of Nepal.

Surya Benai is a misspelling -- it's the way the kamis pronounce the place. I think it is officially Surya Banayak. Take a look and see if you can find that.

I found one road map, fairly decent, with very few towns & cities (but really good roads!). The National Geographic mapmaker site kicks WebTVs out like bad in-laws.In this case, more than half the fun is getting there. I'd lifted the road map URL to post, but lost it when the NG site disconnected. Smeone up there is trying to save me some air fare.

Walosi,

You should have asked... I did my class presentation on Nepal a couple of years ago for Geography class

. I found all of my stuff on the web... I'll try and dig up everything and send it to you. As I recall, there was a really good road map at one of the sites.

Thanks a million, AC. Some great friends of mine lived in Spearfish and I visited there many times. They had a farm out west of town and I'd ride the Black Hills on my motorcycle from the farm using it as home base.

If you have the time and inclination email me off line. Not everybody is interested in old times and old places.

Check with State for most currant news.

Highly advised, from one who has been there, done that.
