A nice Swiss Army Knife will probably be all the knife he'll need, and the most useful knife he'll ever own.

That's what my daughter who is an Air Force intel analyst carries. The can opener makes a great staple puller. It depends on the job. Believe it or not, the Air Force actually issued me a Camillus Ka-bar style knife. I was "Air Commando" (56th Special Ops Wing). I'd love to tell you I jumped out of airplanes with a knife in my teeth and killed commies with it, but I was only a munitions specialist and used the knife mostly to open various munitions. But those munitions killed commies!
