My nephew is 16 he just got his first real knife for his birthday in Oct it was a benchmade model 42 titanium handled balisong, now he's go the fever and wants them all.

We draw names for christmas in that side of the family and have a $50.00 limit, its already been cleared by my sister as she told me to get him a knife.

So, what to get and where to get it? Only criteria is single blade locking folder.

Thanks in advance

Kershaw currently offers several of the best knives in the $50 range in my opinion. you can pick up a Kerhaw G10 Junkyard Dog II from amazon for $44. it's a lot of knife for the money. Or if you prefer something a bit smaller perhaps an OD-1 or Zing from wally world for $39.99. If you think he might like an Assited Opener then the blur or leek are also around $50.

You couldn't go wrong with a Spyderco Delica. It's a little bit over the $50 limit but the nice steel (VG10) and ergonomics are worth it. If you want to be a really "cool" uncle, then try and pick your nephew up a Waved Delica. The wave feature allows the user to draw and deploy the knife from the pocket very quickly.

I'm not sure about the wave idea. Think about it, a 16 year old boy whose first two knives are a BM42 balisong and a waved spyderco. That's a lot of tacticool for a kid to handle :p

I wish my Uncle bought me a cool knife at 16yrs old, But they were drunk all the time

Kershaw.....

Skyline
Zing
Barrage
OD-1
Leek
Ener-g
Junk Yard Dog
Shallot

One of those to start off a 16 year old.

i second the kershaw reply.. cant go wrong with the classic Buck 110? what purposes would he have for knife he gets? hunting? fishing? camping? showing off to friends and cutting paper?

Just get a plainedge Spyderco Delica with a metal clip. The FRN handle is in the range and is a good knife, but for ten more the SS handle is available. I prefer the SS. Totally classic. Plastic feels "cheap."

Benchmade Griptilian or mini grip. Great knives for the $ and they've got the axis lock. Spyderco makes a great knife too but if you go with one, make sure you buy one were the clip is attached by three screws. Older models had one center screw and over time the clip would start to cut into the FRN of the handle and loosen up. Both knives are great but I prefer the BM because of the axis lock. You should also think about the size of the kid's hands. I've got big old paws so I prefer the endura to the delica and the griptilian to the mini grip.

I'd say a Griptilian, being the owner of one (551S), but my buddy just got a Tenacious, and WOW, what a knife for $35!!!

Ewww, drawing names for Christmas prestens, I hated that. :barf:

Read the original post again, I though you said liner locks only, it didn't, I can add more now.

Look at Kershaws, avoid the Vapor, it's not their best work. Especially look at the Leek, Needs Work, and Scallion.
Bucks are great:.110, Vantage, Bucklite, 55, their AOs, all excellent. There are a few imported paraframe models that aren't great but they're only $10 anyway.
Both Wenger and Victorinox have liner locking models that are great and they have other tools.
SOG has a few decent models, Twitch and Flash are good.
Ka-Bar Dozier, they're only $20 or so but you could add a arkansas stone or something with it.

Arguably, one of the best values for the dollar can be found in a Buck 110, which is a classic without peer. That said, I find it hard to resist the siren call of my Kershaw OD-1. I would be pleased to receive either of those knives as a gift.

Hmmmm....I was four when I got my first. Got my oldest nephew his when he was ten (best I could sister, my sister was a little hesitiant for a while). Just got my youngest nephew his first one for his 1st birthday (it was a plastic swiss army knife) ;)

With that said, what about spyderco, maybe an endura 4?

And the winner is........Kershaw Junkyard Dog plain edge. Shipped to my door for $46.00.

Thanks for all the suggestions, I'm sure he will thoroughly enjoy the knife.

Another vote for the 110 here, it's the knife I've owned the longest and used the most. It is also easy to sharpen which is something that can't be said for some of the more modern super steels out there.
