I need some nessmuk advice since I've never owned one.
I've decided I love Koster's pattern, so I'm going with Koster.

The question is... I'm torn between two options
1095 and 1/8" with a scandi grind
3V and 1/4" with a full flat grind

The 3V is obviously better steel, but I've been cautioned before that the biggest mistake to make with a Nessmuk pattern is to get it too thick.

Opinions?
Thanks

1/8" for sure. 1/4" defeats the entire purpose of the nessmuk. Unless it is a Monster nessie, Nessiezilla or Nesserator.

Go for the scandi grind or convex. I prefer convexed myself.

Simply depends what you want it for. If you want a general purpose, hard use knife, go with the 1/4". If you want a nice slicer and dicer that cuts really well and is light weight, go with the 1/8" option.

I recently received my Custom Nessie which I will post a picture of soon. I got mine in 1095. Its 1/8 inch thick, 5 inch blade and 4 1/2 inch handle. It fits my hand and my needs very well. I had the choice of a flat grind or convex. I went with the flat grind. I will probably get one more and try the convex.

I'll be honest in that I won't use the Nessmuk for any of it's intended purposes...
I don't hunt, so I don't skin, gut, field dress, or otherwise interact with dead animals.

I want the Nessmuk for everything that's too small for my Axe and too big for my SAK :)

I actually have a Koster Nessie out of 1/8" 1095 and when you actually hold one you realise just how sturdy these things are, I can't imagine what you would have to do to break one !!!!
And mine came with a hair poppingly sharp Scandi edge !!!!

IMO, while the Koster "Nessmuk" is a good knife (read; very good). It isn't a Nessmuk. The design is far to different than that of the origional.

I'd agree with that. The profile is very nice and it is a great knife. But the only quality shared is the blade shape.

Oh agreed, but as I said I don't intend to use the knife for what Nessmuk used it for, so Koster's hybrid is exactly what I need :)

+1 on Pit's recommendation. I love mine (1/8" 1095, scandi grind). It just seems to fill that niche between SAK and axe so well. A great all-arounder, and tough as nails from what I've been able to tell...

You can't go wrong with a Koster knife. If you're a thick blade guy, then go with the 3V. If you're more into the Nessmuk aspect, then go 1095.

Both those steels are great. I favor 1095.

I like 1/8" for Nessmuks. I've done several with D2 steel. D2 is great for Nessies but O1 is still my favorite for them.

I've got one on order in 1/8" 1095 with a Scandi-grind. I even requested it be shortened from 4.5" to 4.25".
