I would agree that #1 looks more like a "traditional" Nessmuk and therefore gets my vote.

Just the facts.
I like the first because it is most like the original and I bet it will work like a champ.
I like the second for the added safety of a guard for when I'm elbow deep in elk or deer blood and don't want my fingers slipping onto the blade.
 
Just realized another maker on BF is bringing out a Nessmuk, so I'm dropping this project.

I was thinking of having them both made to that new bottom design you came up with.

Maybe make one in that really hard wood I sent you... I would take it off your hands if no one bought it...
 
Just make it better than the other guy.
 
Maybe next month. I used the steel I had to grind out a Woodcraft style knife instead.

The new design will cost more than the old one, so you might want to stay with what you have on order.
 
Nessmuks are popular right now. A few makers on the forums are making them. Gossman just made a few. Might want to strike while the iron is hot on the nessmuck
 
I liked the bottom one, more safe for the fingers. Sorry the project had to be put on hold, still interested to see what the wood craft style one will look like when done, or in the process of getting done.
