Never lend...

Lent a SOG Flash II to a nephew at a recent family function, he knew I always carried a sharp knife. I thought he needed it to open a package. About 30 minutes later, realizing he had not returned it to me, I went looking for it. To my horror it was being used to apply and trim the non-skid material to the top of a new skateboard. The blade literally appeared to be destroyed, the blade serration wouldn't cut butter. Deep scratches everywhere especially along the spine of the blade. Almost started crying when I saw it.

After a couple of hours with a dremel wire and buffing brush, and a serious sharpening session I was able to bring the knife back to an acceptable condition.

Moral of the story, "ask what are you going to use the knife for".

My friend asked me on friday why I have them ask me if they need something cut and don't loan my knife out. I showed him why that night, his brother asked to borrow my brand new CRKT Ripple and before I knew what he was doing I lent it to him and he started trying to cut some metal with it. I found out later what he did with it when I received my knife back missing a 1/4" chip from the blade. I showed it to his brother and said "This is why." and I made his brother run to the store and buy me a new Ripple for chipping it. Needless to say, a lapse of judgment earned me frustration.

I was under the assumption that this thread was a place to comment on the OP's post, and post your own similar story. If it was not, I apologize, but why are people specifically attacking me when this is supposed to be a polite and respectful place? There is disagreeing, and there is attacking. (Not implying anything about anybody, neither am I trying for any type of negative attitude, just posting my belief)

No one is attacking you. People have questioned you because you have essentially told a small piece of your story, then revised that story each time some portion of it was questioned. That creates confusion.

;)That's funny, I was as specific as hell in my story and no one mentioned a damn thing.
I guess Glock knives have a better following than vintage Gerber BMFs.

I won't lend out anything unless I know the person well enough to know they aren't going to abuse it. I think most people don't care enough about their own things to take good care of them, let alone someone else's property. I've had people abuse some of my things in the past and I've read too many horror stories on here to let that happen to me.

Because other people have the special ability to do things with a knife that would break a thick blade in CPM-3V(never actually happened, but I suspect this is the truth).

The part that confused me was when there were questions about what happened to a $20 knife. I was even more confused when there were admonitions to replace it even after learning the original owner had stolen $55 from the guy who broke the $20 knife. I was also confused about the incredulity shown in response to throwing a $20 knife produced with the heat treat and edge geometry of a boat anchor.

A friend once asked to borrow my Snap-on flat head screwdriver to which I said no. I told him I liked him and didn't want to bury his body in the woods after finding out he use it as a pry bar. Yup....he's one of those.

I also just realized that. People are going a bit overboard with all of the questions on a knife that could easily be hard for $15 used (his was used very hard before he got it), comes dull a ball new, and is very soft steel. Maybe I could say that I lent one of my throwing knives to a friend and he got it stuck in a tree, the entire blade (that was at least 4in.) was sunk in, and some of the handle was also sunk in. Moral of my second story: Never lend somebody who throws a 90mph+ fastball a throwing knife.

Come on Cold Kill... please. I would hurry up and edit out that last post, too.

Shee-oooot, some dude on here lent his bud his Strider for a second or two and the guy scratched it with his toof or sumthin. When in doubt, don't lend it out!

I guess some people should just stick with their Gerber Paraframes
