NEVER let someone "borrow" your knife

I was helping a friend set up for a birthday party this weekend. We had a lot of packages to open, table clothes to tie down, boxes to break down, food to cut, etc. and I was the only one who seemed to think that bringing a knife was a good idea

A gentleman asked to borrow my knife for a few minutes and I reluctantly obliged. I was carrying my small Sebenza because it was casual weekend carry...

I walk over and the guy is using my Sebenza to break up ice! He is using the blade like an ice pick and stabbing the bag of ice to try and break it apart!:mad::mad::mad::mad:

It took everything I had to not scream at this guy. I firmly asked for my knife back and checked for damage. Thankfully all looks good. I told the guy that if you want to break up a bag of ice, just bang it on the ground... He seemed to think this was a novel idea

NEVER let someone "borrow" your knife!

breaking up ice... couldve been worse... way worse bro. consider yourself extremely lucky ;)

That shouldn't have hurt the knife really and it came out fine as you said.

I had an afghani terp run up to me agitatedly askng me for a knife. Without even thinking I handed him an endura that I had for years, and he grabs it and starts to sprint off. I yell out to him asking what he needs it for (as at this point im thinking theres trouble) and he turns his head long enough to yell out two words "Kill Cow". Never saw that knife again about a half hour later there where two cow legs in a black trash bag. You got off easy bro, but seem to have learned your lesson. I about strangled the guy.

This should cause no damage to the knife/edge. I've done it several times with high end folder, although I understand your affliction.

Thus the reason that I carry a beater knife in my right pocket along with my usual EDC folder in the other pocket...

If someone wants to "borrow a knife" to use for something, I just hand them a used SAK or my Kabar Dozier, and let them have at it. The used SAK's I pick up on Fleabay for under $10, and the Kabar is only about $20. So if they want to go crazy and crush cocktail ice, or randomly jab it into a sidewalk, I don't care either way.. ;)

Learned that lesson a long time ago, now when i'm asked my first question is, What for?? Followed by ok bring it here and ill cut it for you or show me where it it is and ill cut it for you, I had an emerson commander get screwed up by some D.A. at my work trying to cut the biggest friggin ziptie i've ever seen with it, that edge was nearly ruined by this, I was hot to say the least.

I would hope a $400 knife could handle breaking up some ice that has frozen back together. Steel is a heck of a lot stronger than ice. I have done it many times though I'm sure I would cringe if I was watching someone else use my knife to do it. I would probably be more careful doing it as well, but it should still have no problem with the task. CRK even runs their steel soft for such occasions. ;)

Now if they had been cutting up bait on a concrete dock, that would have been cause for concern. Still, it's your knife and you learned a valuable lesson without having to suffer real damage. This time it wasn't so bad, but next time it could be a $400 mistake. Always offer to do the cutting if someone asks. Just say too many people have cut themselves with your razor sharp knives and you don't want them to hurt themselves if you are worried about offending them.

I'd only borrow my knife to someone I know carries one for edc but forgot it at home
Otherwise no chance in hell.

I'll cut whatever they need cut

Unless the person is a fellow knife nut, I don't let anyone use my knife. Especially if I'm carrying a higher-end piece. If someone needs a knife, I ask what they need cut and I do it for them. Some people seem kind of "insulted" but they also probably don't realize the worth of that knife or even how to close it properly. :D

I've used a knife before to bust up some bagged ice, though it was Ka-Bar MK1 and not a Sebenza. Though I didn't use the blade of my knife for this either. I used the oversized pommel for this particular job.

Using a knife as an icepick wouldn't bother me at all. I've done it myself on more than one occasion. It is when they try and use them as screwdrivers that bothers me. A while back I had a coworker ask if I had a leatherman on me and my response was all that I had was my knife. She said that would work. That seemed a little odd to me so I asked what she was trying to do. Sure enough she needed a screwdriver so I went out to my truck and got her one.

One of the advantages of folks scared of knives is that they wouldn't dream of touching my "weapon".

I have a knife at home that serves as a constant reminder that knives are not designed to function as ice picks.

I have a legacy of broken, damaged, and lost tools that are a reminder that lending tools is a bad idea.

Why would you lend someone -- someone whose frame of mind will not permit them to own (or at least carry) a necessary tool -- a knife or other tool so that they can impose on it whatever thinking disorder they have that deprives them of that tool? Because (shocker, I know) that thinking disorder will deprive you of your knife or tool.

Don't allow people to impose their thinking (or "owning") disorders on your stuff.

Them, "hey, can I borrow your knife a sec?"

Me, "what can I cut for you?"

EVERY time. No worries;)

Haha this is pretty funny. Mainly because you freaked out that your 'expensive superior knife with great steel etc.' was used to break ice. Hahaha seriously? That'd be like being upset someone got water on your knife. Honestly if you are going to carry a knife make sure you don't get butt hurt when its used. Otherwise just make it a safe queen. The only reason I would be upset at this is if he was stabbing through the Ice into the counter top or concrete.

no giving weapons to strangers.

on a similiar vein, was waiting for the wife shopping in the handbag store when a small girl came up to me and asked if I had a knife to cut the tag off her stuffed doll. guess she saw the pocket clip. waved and took care of it then saw her Mom staring at me with bugged out eyes, mouth agape and luckily she didn't make a scene about it. yipes.
