2 months ago my wife made reservations at a hotel down in Destin, FL where she thought we had stayed before (about 3 years ago). She tells them there will be 2 kids, 2 adults, and one full size dog. She also says she wants a cabin on the beach for 3 nights. She asks many questions about the facilities and they assure her that everything is booked and good to go.
We get down there after a 6 hour drive and enter Murphy's Law. Turns out they overbooked and they have to place us in another type of room. After some haggling, which I hate to do, they finally set us up in a family room with a kitchen. This is lodging on a military base and is meant for families in between assignments. But they fail to mention that we cant have a pet and will be $150 non-refundable deposit if we stay. We check out, and attempt to find something on the economy. After some searching (this is the busiest time of year there, we find a place that accepts pets. As the hotel owner is swiping my card, I ask where I can walk my dog on the beach. He says, "Oh, you can't do that. Dogs are not allowed on any beach here in FL. If your caught it's a $250 fine". I couldnt understand why he waited to tell me till after I paid until I asked for a refund.. I eventually got it, but I almost lost my temper with the manager.
Checked out, and then drove back home. 6 hours there, 6 back plus running around.
When did it become against the law to walk your dog on the leash on the beach?
It's a lesson learned and perhaps something that I took for granted, but I remember seeing dogs at the beach on a leash when I was a kid. I spent time in Fort Myers and remember taking our dog to the beach all the time.
Well anyways, sorry for the rant. Guess I'll go baton something and take my aggression out.

This is the VERY reason that we stay away from tourist areas when we travel anywhere. no matter if it's domestic or international. Not talking about you since I don't even know you, but tourists, as a general rule, are idiots and idiocy attracts those that feed on idiots. If you want to get jacked, assaulted, robbed, mugged, pick-pocketed or cheated out of your money and clothes, then go to a tourist area. Typically they are a feeding ground for con artists, shysters and criminals. Beach tourist areas top my list of places NOT to go.

Why did they ban your dog? Simple. Most likely some idiot allowed his dog to cause problems somehow so the knee-jerk response is to ban all dogs. Sort of like banning guns. Also remember that $250 fines are easy pickings for those that simply want to generate revenue from unsuspecting tourists.

Dude, load the family up and go somewhere that no one else is at and you'll be better off.

That sucks bigtime Michael. Sorry to hear that bro. I'm with Jeff. Anytime I go somewhere, domestic or international, I find the furthest place from tourists I can find.

Generally speaking, there are exceptions to every rule, assclowns don't like to go to the mountains and...again, generally speaking, assclowns have an aversion to camping out...especially in the mountains. Don't get me wrong, the beach can be wonderful! Awesome place. I think part of the problem is, it is so nice and so accessible that the morons flock there and where morons flock, laws will flourish. As well as other, unpleasant flowers. Sorry you got the stinky end of the mop.

But Don, that's a good thing since it leaves more places for us to go! ;)

That sucks.

Why didn't you drive 20 minutes west to FT Walton Beach?

When I was stationed there it was fine to have a dog on the beach. That was about 10 years ago though....

I always try to go north for vacations... way north. My favorite destination is a remote camp in Canada where there are no roads and, most importantly, no people. We are flown in and land on the lake. Once the plane leaves, it's not uncommon to have an entire lake to ourselves for a week. That's my idea of R&R. :)

Good advise Jeff but to be honest, as much as I love camping and the mountains, my wife loves the beach. A happy wife = a happy life.
We didnt go to Fort Walton due to timing. Most of the hotels are booked and not many except pets. By the time we had found out about the no pets on the beach law, it was close to 21:30. So we figured that law applied to all of the beaches in northern FL.
I also wouldnt feel comfortable leaving a 65 lb dog by herself in a hotel room even if she is well behaved.

That sucks, dude. Florida used to be one of the great places in the country, but no more. They're starting to ruin SC, as well.

Dude, tell her they have beaches on Lake Guntersville! It's the Redneck Riviera!

As soon as my girlfriend gets back from Texas/Mexico, she and I are headed to either Lake Guntersville or Bucks Pocket for a couple of days. Beautiful places, both of them!

If we have a new law in Florida that outlaws pets on all beaches, it is definately news to me. Here in south Florida we have many beaches that allow pets (on leashes legally- though many many people control their pets just fine without leashes.) I think you are legally expected to clean up after them too as you might expect.
No problems down here though.
Wish you better luck next time. Come visit us again, you are always welcome! (just avoid the super touristy areas for better luck.)

Where I live, there are loads of state parks and they all have laws about "No glass containers!" and something like a $250 fine as well. Of course, at least 90% of the people who read those well posted signs usually think the law is aimed at banning beer bottles but the looks on their faces are priceless when they find out they're going to be fined $250 for that Miracle Whip jar sitting there on the picnic table.

It's always about the revenue, man. Always.

OK, so do you do a 50/50 split or what? Does she believe that a happy husband = a happy life or what? If you wanna run to the hills, does she tell you to pound salt 'cause yur goin' to the beach or what? :D

Actually, she splits it closer to 90/10 in my favor. She is very supportive of camping, my knives, fishing and hunting, etc hobies.
