Thought I would share these light quilt I made for my survival kit/hikes. Its so light I always carry it when hiking. Enjoy.

Here is my newest 40*F SUL quilt. Made by me. Shell and liner are made from Ripstop Nylon. Climashield XP insulation. I have tested these in Big Bear CA, Grand Canyon National Park AZ, Mt Whitney CA (highest trail in the US), San Gorgonio Ca (highest mountain in Southern CA), Mt San Jacinto CA (second highest peak in Southern CA), Cuchamonga Peak CA, Jashua Tree National Park CA.

It has a neck closure/drawstring and snaps together behind the neck. Very simple and Super Ultra Light! Fits a person up to 5'9". Sized to mimic the Nunatak Arc Ghost. 46Width/34Foot.

NICE! Kind of like an insulated bivy sack. Bear, would you consider posting a tutorial? I'm interested in an ultralight sleeping system to compliment my SilShelter.

Is that a gossamer gear silshelter you have? I am all about the Super Ultralight gear. You are right when you say sleep system. Layering with a quilt and tarp or tarp bivy combo is the best way to multi-use gear already on the trail. It would be a little too detailed to explain here. I can maybe email something like that.

Nope, it is made by Integral Designs. Here is a pic.

I want to pair this up with an ultralight bivy bag andw was thinking about a sub-kilo down bag, but maybe a quilt like you designed, with a DWR, would do the trick.

I have an Integral Designs Poncho and they make good stuff. I used my quilt and poncho tarp without a bivy in the summer. In the windy seasons or when it gets real wet I use a bivy with quilt.

Let me know if you are interested in a quilt like mine. Combined with that setup you will be lighter than most. Throw in a light bivy and your good for all weather and temperatures (within reason).

I always wanted to try and make the quilt from Ray Jardine. They look super warm and of course light, and I like blankets more than sleeping bags if I have a choice. Nice work there.

Wow! I'm interested in both the quilt and the shelter....hope the costs aren't too high...this forum is costing me a fortune....but I love it!

Wow Bear, you made that yourself? Those are some fantastic sewing skills! Maybe I'm easily impressed because I don't think I even know how to turn on a sewing machine, but it looks great to me. Don't know if this is something you are throwing out there for everyone, but if so I'd be interested. :)

I hear you about liking blankets more than sleeping bags. I sleep with this at home. When I travel to hotels I use my own quilt since I know where its been and whos been in there. It is a superlight blanket with a fixed footpocket. This is how they slept in the old west when they would cowboy camp and how ghengis kahn would do it. Put a blanket or animal hide over you and tuck your feet and sides in. This cuts down on weight dramatically. It makes it very easy if you sleep in a hammock or bivy. Many frustrating nights getting up to pee from a hammock and bivy made me get a quilt. I haven't been cold since either and I just use a poncho tarp as my shelter.

Anyone interested in quilt discussion feel free to email me!

Ok, I know this is an old thread but I am looking to get/make a light sleeping bag and I was wonderign if there any updates to this design. I have been doing some internet research and found this design to be quite popular. I use a tent, tarp or hammock when I go out so this lightweight option looks good to me. The added versatility of a velcro foot pocket woud be even better.

Beautiful quilt! Looks like super craftsmanship.

My wife and I made a two person quilt from a Jardine kit. We have slept VERY comfortably many times in this quilt in temperatures well below zero. We much prefer this quilt to our mummy sleeping bags. The quilt is zipped together in the middle so she carries half, I carry the other. :)

The Ray Jardine quilt is much heavier and doesn't have any neck closure/drawstring.

One more thing about the added versatility of a velcro foot pocket you mentioned. It will let in drafts no matter how you do it. I never saw the reason of making the quilt open so a person could close it themselves and possibly have cold feet in the process.
Thanks for the interest and good luck with it.

I was thinking of making something similiar. It would be simpler, a fleece for the interior nylon or an equivalent for the exterior. The fleece for warmth and nylon for a shell that would block wind and add toughness an durability. Would yall think this is a good idea? I could always add some insulating material if I want to make it warmer.

Thanks Tony.

ORREY45-Fleece is pretty good at blocking wind already. The nylon shell would really block wind. Ripstop 1.1 oz. or better yet Momentum 90 is what I used on the grey quilt I made.
