New 2x72 Variable Grinder for approx $1000.00 cnd

I thought that I would share my new variable grinder with the group.

$200 cnd New Scientific Pacific 1 hp DC motor from Ebay

I have only been practicing grinding wood and sharpening every knife around the house. Variable speed and reverse is really nice for sharpening knives blade up. I am planing on mounting the DC controller upright just behind the motor.

Thoughts?

Don not grind knife blades in reverse!!! If you have ever had a belt grab a blade and suck it into the space between the rest and platten you know you dont want it shooting the opposite direction.

Since the motor is DC does that mean its single-phase or two-phase?

I looked at designing and building my own DC controller circuit. But Beel sells a bare board driver solution for $50.00 us, just add the enclosure and pot. The cost and time factor did not warent the hassel of me building 2 units.

I did purchase a bare board driver solution for my second 1hp dc motor. But this DC controller does not have reverse and I wanted this option for knife sharpening on my grinder.

Yea, on an AC motor you've got to vary the frequency of the sine wave in order to control the speed. On DC you just switch it off and on with a PWM. Easy as pie. Wouldn't be a problem for me because we've got a circuit miller here at work... prolly got all the parts too.

Its on my wish list, maybe ill walk over to knut's shop and take a looksey myself! If you wanted, you could take it into the woods with a car battery and a transformer and grind with nature!

The DC motor won't use phases the same way AC does, the speed controller he attaches to it is the only thing that cares about the AC phases and voltage.

Since the motor is DC does that mean its single-phase or two-phase?
