So I just now received this beauty and have a few questions.

1. Does this one have a serial number or does that number mean something else?
2. Notice the pin above the U, its rescessed a good 8th down, is this normal?
3. Should there have been any paperwork that should have came with the knife?

Questions aside, I absolutely love this knife fit and finish are perfect aside from the fact it came unsharpened? Maybe they all do? Still it is very well made with good snap. This is going to be a whole new addiction. Thanks for looking guys.

No that's the model number. Serial numbers are on the bolster.

Mine has a recessed pin too.

No paperwork unless it's serialized.

Mine came very dull as well

It looks great! The blade grinds from GEC are excellent, the edge bevels...meh. Put the edge on it that YOU like and it will keep it beautifully. As already stated, yours is not serialized, which is quite fine, as sometimes they are rarer that the ones that are serialized. Enjoy that blade, and the beautiful patina that will form quickly if used on food!

Nice 85 EO! Mine just got back from the "spa" at GEC -- it has the recessed pin and came dull (twice! Dull when purchased and re-dulled after being repaired.) Like Mike said, put your own edge on it and enjoy!

Looks great-- thanks for the pictures, and be reassured about its seeming issues.

Any chance we can get a glimpse of its backside pile side?

Thanks very much Pertinux I do feel lucky as well. And the more I think about it the more I feel complete and I dont need to break the bank and buy anymore....maybe just a 12...have to see.

After further inspection i did notice the blade is a little warped or bent slightly causing it to be off center..any way i can fix it on my own or just forget about it and carry?

Nice knife, and as others have said, very well-matched stag. The recessed pin is normal on thicker covers like stag and Primitive bone. The scale pins are always the same length to avoid bending or tilting, so they'll always appear recessed if they coincide with a thick area of the handle material.

A recessed pin can serve as a handy indicator of cover thickness when purchasing stag GECs from on-line photos, since many dealers don't provide an edge-on view.

Thanks Rick that was very informative. So matching stag that is thick is a plus and what everyone is after. Thnks for the insight guys. And thanks for looking mark.

Well, matching texture, color and thickness are always desirable, whereas overall thickness is more a matter of taste and a trade-off: a thick handle is sometimes preferable in the hand ergonomically, but it can be too bulky in the pocket. I'd say that yours is in the sweetspot.

It is Rick, I can just barely feel her talkin in my pocket. Ive been stropping her all morning..what a beautiful knife and very well made, I must say,and the more I read the more I realize this one is perfect. Thanks again guys for setting this newbie streight.

One more thing, I get the idea and think I shouldnt let it slam shut. I should let the blade retract easily by restricting it with my fingers?

Unequal thickness of Stag handles is seen with many Traditional folders, especially German ones. The mark side is a little flatter to sit against the palm and the pile side swells a bit more for the fingers to wrap around. (made for right handed people).
"Matching Stag" is a more recent idea. With vintage folders the Stag was chosen so that both pieces will fit so that none of the top 'bark' needed removing to get a flush fit with the bolsters. (not ground off so that the underlying white shows) The 'pattern' or texture, of the Stag differing from side to side was not considered of prime importance.

Thanks Roland so there sure is alot more to these traditional slippys than meets the eye. Like the pile side? Not sure what all the terms mean. Is pile the back?

What Roland said about the different size of the two handles - especially on traditional german folders - is correct.

Here´s a pic of my stag handles C. Schlieper Canoe

As you can see, one side is thicker than the other for getting a better grip. Hope that pics helps a little.

BTW: Nice #85 :) I like the look of that and the stag is great!

Mark side = side with name of manufacturer or merchant. Put it down with mark side uppermost and it is the position for use when picked up, so the mark side is also the front side of the knife.
Pile side = backside. I've forgotten what "pile" refers to. Maybe someone can give the reason for this word.
Folding knives are a marvel of subtle complexity. Every dimension and every angle of every piece must be 'just so' for a folding knife to fit and function smoothly. I think only knifemakers or those who work in a cutlery factory know all of the considerations needed to build a folding knife.

Thanks Humppa, ya that helped. That looks like a nice knife you got there as well.

Rprocter where do i begin....thanks for the lesson on termenology, and you sure as heck nailed it, knives are very simple yet very complicated at the same time. Makes me think that traditional slipjoints are hadder to build than modern lockbacks.

Very nice! I use to say if I was to get a single blade it would be a #73 but these 85EOs have changed my mind for me!

There is a discussion here, of varying conclusions. ;)
