greetings ,to the first guy orvet good find on that schrade , my question i can still get about 7 104 and 108 old timers their now down to 10.00 and 12.00 dollars should i go get the rest of these in my area to put away are they worth it

tthman,

You bet!!

If you tried to buy a good using knife from the U.S.A. you would pay more than that, for sure. Can you make a profit selling them?...Don't know for certain. But they are worth every bit of those prices, that's for sure.

Bill

Uh Bill,

How about posting a photo of your "unfolder" ??

There are links between it and Schrade!

i think i will go buy the rest of those schrades after the christmas rush.they will probably be there, just to understand why their still there i went into the same store middle of october and bought around 15 8ots including 5 with the older packaging from the early to mid 90s.i can still pick up some usa x timers on closeout does anybody out there have an opinion on these. Thanks for the previous reply

Del,

No fair leaking that secret information.
Once I got over the shock of my fixed blade purchase and I returned home, I decided to let my wife give it to me for a Christmas present. So I can't get at it for awhile. :o

It was very enjoyable to get to meet you and spend some time furthering my Schrade education. Hope you had as much fun at the show as I did.

On topic...The XTimers don't hold the same allure for me that Old Timers and Uncle Henrys do. But, that's just me. Others probably feel differently.

I had a real cool find a couple days ago. It is a 5OT with green saw-cut derlin handles for $5.00 at a pawn shop. I thought all the 5OTs had Stainless Steel blades but this one is obviously carbon steel. The blade is full with a well developed patina.
Does anyone know anything about the 5OT and the type of steel used?

I also got a 141 in excellent condition for it's age. The blade is full, I don't think it has ever been sharpened. There are a few minor stains on the blade but for the most part it looks almost new. There is a little discoloration on the brass guard, but the guard & the butt cap both have part of the protective varnish on them. The leather handle is in great condition. It did not have the original sheath, which as far as I can tell is the only negative about it. But , for 10 bucks I guess I can't complain. :D

I thought Mike would be proud of me.

Maybe I should start making the rounds of the pawnshops here. You got a passle of good deals. That little 141 is a nice knife. They first sold in the late 1950's, later updated into the 41OT Maverick in '71-'73. The blade pattern is very close to one of my old George Schrade Stagbrands.

The 5OT is one I have been looking for. Made from '87-'98, they were supposed to be Schrade+ stainless. Congratulations on some nice finds again!

Codger

I thought you would be impressed Mike. Maybe you can help me date it.
The tang stamp is:
SCHRADE-WALDEN
N.Y. U.S.A.
141
Got any idea of when it might have been made? According to the info I have they used Schrade Walden from 1946 to 1973. My 141 has the hyphen between Schrade and Walden. I don't have any info as to the dates of the use of the hyphen. Do you (or anyone else) know?

Mike, what size is your Stagbrand? The one I have is about 6 1/2 inches, smaller than a Ka-bar or Case, Little Finn. It is a great little trout knife. It has 153 stamped in what appears to be ink on the reverse tang.

I am starting to get a real affection for the leather handled knives. They are pretty sweet!

Dale

PS- I have gotten a lot of knives from pawn shops. You may have to search through a box of junk to find the good stuff, but it is worth the hassle. I almost missed the 141 & the 5OT because they were buried under some cheap junk. I took one last look and found the 141 and the 5OT was under it. I had a hard time not shouting 'Eureka' when I realised what I had found, (Shouting 'Eureka' when trying to dicker on the price can be counter productive).

I just received what should be a LB8, but the tang is marked BC. Does anyone know what BC signifies? There are no other markings or etching that would indicate a contract knife or special edition.

Hello Redshanks,
The BC is the tang stamp for a blade that belongs to a scrimshaw knife entitled Bear Cult (see picture). But your knife should have a blade with a tang stamp LB8. So, it looks like you have a knife that either made it past the inspectors (which happens) or was assembled from parts. Either way, a cool knife. I tend to like knives like this, a slight oddity, wish you knew the story behind this particular knife.
Hope this helps.
Tom

Thanks Tom, I don't have any catalogs so I never would have figured that out. I have a similar LB7 with smooth white Delrin scales that was probably intended to be scrimmed. The tang on this one is marked TB, any idea what series that belongs to? Was there a "Turkey Buzzard" knife? :D

Given Tom's earlier hint, I would guess Thunderbird, from the same series.
Codger

Why thank you Codger. I guess I'll be the first person who never knew what they were to have the whole series in unfinished or error knives.

I have read about the elusive 225OT but never saw one in person. I just received this one and it's a big'un:

Nice, REAL nice! Now I need to find one to go with my 225H. :D
Congrats redshanks on a real find!

I got a nice new Schrade today.

I have another that looks like it until you look closer. My other one has none of the detail this one has. This one had never been removed from the plastic bag. The bag was stuck to it with a heavy oily/waxy substance, obviously meant as a preservative. It was almost like a light weight cosmoline. You notice the seller photographed it in the plastic. I am sure he would have gotten more for it if he had posted a better picture. It is serial numbered, #09749, with GRAND DAD'S OT BARLOW LTD. on the main blade with a tang stamp: SCHRADE/G.D.B.I/U.S.A. The back springs and brass liners are engraved.
I will try and get a scan or pic and post it if I can pick up the detail.

Dale

Now THAT is a great knife. I can't believe that's all you paid for it. Please post some pics or scans.

Thanks redshanks,
Here are 2 scans of the knife. You may have to up the magnification to see the finer details.
I have also included 2 scans of the paperwork that was in the box, especially for Mike. Gonna' get him hooked on folders yet :D

The knife came in a box w/ a brown wood bottom, a clear plastic display top, and a blue velvet coated plastic insert for display purposes. The box was in yet another black box, with the following words on the front:

Grand Dad's Old Timer Barlow
Limited Edition (in cursive script)

Schrade Cutlery Corp. at the bottom

All this was surrounded with a white cardboard sleeve with 09749 (the serial number of the knife) stamped on the side of the sleeve.
I was really impressed that all the packaging was still there. It appears that someone bought this and put it away and never even took the plastic off the knife.
The box will make a nice display and the insert displays the knife with the main blade partially open........................which brings me to a burning question..........Should a knife be displayed with the blade partly open? It seems that I have heard somewhere that will cause the back spring to weaken. Has anyone had this experience? It seems that greater tension is on the spring when the blade is partly open, and it makes sense on the surface, but I don't know enough about the steel in the springs know for sure. Can anyone help me? Mike, Larry, Phil, LT???? Anyone???
