New Addition

Leather dye didn't work to well. Burning worked better, but dried the haft too much imho. I have read that applying india ink is "the best method" of "ebonizing" wood. India ink is next!

What about RID dye? Also, what do you think would happen if I stuck the pre-sanded haft in the oven for a while directly before I try dying it?

I dont think I would put it in the oven. Would dry it out too much. You could try a wood stain ( tint ) very concentrated color used to change the color of wood stains. They come in black, brown, yellow, red, etc. Sherwin Williams, Hirshfields and other paint stores can get them..

I tried RIT die and that didn't work out so well. The darkest stain I could find was minwax "Ebony." I tried that on several handles but it was not dark enough IMHO. I wanted dead black. Torching gave me the black I wanted, but it cooked the handle too much. I'm gonna try the india ink next.

F.Y.I. Normally if we want to darken the stain on woodwork we first "spray" the wood with water to open the grain. Then we stain and it usually makes a conciderable difference.

I was thinking about staining 2 handles, one in an ebony (black) and the other in a cherry (dark red) stain...
I was considering soaking the 2 'hafts' (OK, you win) in the stains, maybe for a few days each...
I want the stain to go really deep into the wood...
Thoughts?

Yes. I only call them hafts 'cause I don't want to be viewed as the rookie no nothing newb I am and -- I guess -- because that's what they're called.

I think soaking for a few days is a good idea; I had thought about that but I don't have the patience. If you're doing a trail hawk handle :) make sure you sand it good 'cause they come from the factory with some type of sealant or stain on them. If you soak in stain also try to stain a 2nd handle by wiping the stain on. This 2nd handle would act as a control to see if the soaked handle turns out darker. I'd be interested in the results.

CitizenQ,

I would be 'modding' a CS Frontier Hawk...
In fact, it would be this one here...

I started with a 'regular' haft (really light-colored, practically white), but noticed that one of the few spares I ordered was a bit dark (above)... it is still hickory, just a bit dark... the photo shows the true color, it is darker than a 'honey' color...

I don't plan on any sort of wrap, because I want this to be a thrower, so I want a full-length, smooth haft...

And of course, I would DEFINITELY post a picture!!!
