New Alaskan Guide 110 on the Way

I just placed on order for the Alaskan guide 110 from Cabelas. I have read some of the threads on it in the last couple of days and if it is half as good as some of you have testified to, i am really excited.:D
This will be my main EDC and hunting knife. My old buck 110 hunter that I used for skinning was stolen, and I have been meaning to get another, although I have not hunted for few years, I am going to start again this fall/winter.
I also have 110 BG-42 coming from the custom shop, I mentioned that in my first post last week. This will be for dressing up.
Who has a AG110 and what can you tell me about it? I am planning to take the Ag label off the blade, suggestions are good, I think I read that paint thinner or goof-off will work? Do you like the S30V steel? I have had it on Benchamde and Spyderco, it was good... I just like Buck knives better , thus sold my others and buying 110s again. Found out I was kindof a traditionalist at heart. Anyway. My old 110, which was stolen, and the custom I orderd a week ago have nickel bolsters. Obviously the Ag has the brass bolsters. Does anybody prefer the look of the brass, I never thought I would, but it might grow on me I think. It seemed like it would tarnish easily. Is there a good way to take care of the bolsters? I know I asked a bunch of questions. Sorry guys. Oh... and if anyone has pics that will hold me till mine comes... thanks!

I don't know if I can answer your question, but I love my Cabelas 110.It's razor sharp and locks up like a tank.I have a lot of new fangled folders, but it's hard to beat a sharp Buck 110.

I have 2 of the cabelas 110's at this point. It is a really attractive knife. Personally, I do not mind the cabela's AG stamp on the blade.
I got the second one as a safe queen, as I use the first as a carry when I am in the woods (I usually have some version of the 110 with me)
The brass does tend to tarnish, but flitz brings back the shine in seconds. I am currently trying auto wax on the bolsters... time will tell how well that works.

Durbin,

Do a search here on Alaskan 110 and you should find a ton of stuff we have posted about it. Or maybe just try Alaskan, because some of us have also talked about the Vanguard.

I took the emblem off one of mine and now sorry that I did. After all it is Designated an Alaskan. To me, after I took the emblem off, it was just another 110 with and S30V blade. But it is a user so not so bad. Just my feelings.

I got mine last hunting season and used it extensively. Was quite a blabber mouth here about it.. So dig up all those old posts. Too much to retype .

It is a winner.

Brass Tarnish!! Whod-a-thunk it..... ;)

Thats just a way of life with brass. Get an 8 oz can of Brasso and gently polish away.... I sez 8 oz because it goes a long way. A little dab will do ya.

And I sez gently, because it will wear on the brass a tad. Brasso will polish out small scratches if you work it. Some of us use a 1x2 board a foot or so long that is nice and flat, no grain wrinkles, and wrap a coupl layers of cloth around a couple of inches on the end... Then a dab of brass and work the knife on the board... Saves your fingers. But most of all, polishes the bolster surface evenly. Tho a minor thing, I have some 110's that are quite uneven across the bolsters, for whatever reason.

I took the AG logo off , and like it. Which ever way you go you will like the AG 110. Good steel and good looking. Preston

Thanks for the replies ya'all. I think I will do some more searching on the Alaskan. I think I don't want the label on it... but I guess I oughta wait until it comes before making that decision. Maybe I should get some brasso too, although I have flitz, that works too? Time to do some more reading.

I use Nevr-Dull, and then a coat of car/paste wax [*not* polish]. This pretty much stalls the oxidizing...but someone mentioned car wax on an EDC...I think that would tend to wear it off...but I dunno; my EDC is SS...

I have a 110 and a 112. I try to keep the 110 bolsters shiny, but I've gotten to the point that I have let the bolsters on the 112 "age" gracefully. They're pretty tarnished, with some dings and scratches, but it seems OK for the 112. It's my "go-to" knife: there are just some jobs that call for a sharp but well used knife, and the 112 gets my vote.

ld57,

That was one of the things I was trying to find out. Far as I have read... you can use something such as a common paint thinner or goof-off , with either rubbing hard with a rag, or using a stiff wire brush. The label will remove after a few miuntes of scrubbing. then use flitz or something like that to polish or rub over I think. I have not done it yet, my knife will not be here till next week. Someone who has done it, will probably explain better than I !:o

The product that I used was Klean-Strip, Strip-x Stripper, then followed with Flitz. Preston

They are good knives. Im a big fan of S30V. I just strop the blades on mine and they are ready to go again!

As far as the brass, just use a little flitz, semi-chrome, or brasso with a cloth and they will polish up just fine.

Well, the knife arrived today thanks to the friendly guy in the Big Brown Truck. I have to say it is a very well built knife, exceeding my exptations. The edge is very good right out of the box, it looks beautiful and just fills the hand very nicely. I am nnot sure now that I look at the Alaskan Guide logo if I will take it off. Probably, but it is not as bad as i thought. Anyway, if I can get my wife's camera to take pics, then I will. Great knife... I highly reccommend all buck lovers to own one.:D

Problem is easily solved Durbin,,,, just order another one. :D

Strip one and leave the other.
