I'd give the same advice on self-defense, and knives like the Perrin. Even if you get into a fight, the knife doesn't have to come out at the first sign of pushing and shoving. If you aren't trained, it's a liability, and I should say that includes legally trained.
Know the law and your rights and the definitions under which self-defense is allowed before you start waving a blade around in a fight. If you are trapped or outnumbered or under serious attack by someone you cannot possibly otherwise control, then you have some rights. If a punk kid says your wife is ugly and walks away laughing, keep the knife in your pocket
But you never talk about carrying a knife for self-defense with anyone but your fellow knife knuts or your actual training partners in the arts of fighting with weapons.
The Perrin is an excellent utility knife, not really very large, with a great grip. If you're going to a wedding, some people might think it inappropriate. "What do you cae what other people think?" If you're going for a walk through the woods, it's the minimum you should have.
