Hey guys, I've been lurking around for awhile and figured its time I jumped in! Im a proud owner of a new ESEE 4 and Im flat out happy to be surrounded by such a knowledgeable(crazy) bunch such as yourselves! :D
But since i got your attention ATM Im gonna hit y'all up for some advise...Im in need of a new pair of hiking boots. Mine are shot and Im looking for all-around good boots, comfort, durability, looks, warranty, etc. Just trying to get more bang for my buck like any sensible person would ;). All comments/info is appreciated!

I've had real good luck with Danner & Altama for 8-9" boots and Dunham & Rocky for mid-height. (Dunham is made by New Balance, so they make really wide shoes as well)
Wife likes North Face (very stiff sole), Hi-tech Magnums, and Timberline

I like my Merrells. Really comfortable and well made.

It comes down to what you want to spend...

Ive got a pair of Nike ACGs that ive had for several years. they have worn quite well. they have been through the mountains in China to the Sam Houston national forest. for the price you cant beat them.

if you aren't worried about trendy, I got a pair of last years' Merrells real cheap via REI. Always check their outlet online as well.

I had the best results with gov. issue military boots for daily wear when I was working in construction (20 years+). Depending on conditions, I wore the basic all-leather grunt boots, jungle boots or desert boots. All are superb for comfort and durability:thumbup:. I'm retired now and still wear the boots when I'm out in the boonies or working in the yard. Excellent value for the money.

 on the Merrells. I bought a pair of the Chameleon Stretches and they are my favorite shoes for work/hiking to date.

My top three would be.
1. Merrell Chameleon Stretch
2. Oakley Assault Boot 6 inch
3. Danner GTX

i have the oakley assault 8" boots and i love them. i wear them daily for work, there super light, super comfortable, i got these after i feathered my achilees tendon and the ankle support has been great. ive had these going on 3 years and there holding up great, work, camping, paintballing, hiking these get a lot of use.

If you can find something reasonably priced or on clearance @ REI keep in mind that they have a very good satisfaction guarantee. I brought back some pants I purchased 2 yrs earlier because of some ripping @ the pocket and was able to exchange it for a new pair. Granted these were REI brand pants, but their guarantee extends to everything they sell.

Zamberlan are really nice had worn them for a month in Peru and still wear them daily there so damn conferrable but expensive there made in Italy.

Stick to the more common brands and buy in the store. Boots are about the only thing I won’t order over the net. If they are uncomfortable out of the box, I’d try a different size and if that doesn’t help, move on to a different style. With that said, I bought a pair of Bass Pro Redhead hikers on sale last year as some disposable boots and I’m still wearing them. They’ve held up great, but for store brands I often find that’s the exception not the norm.

Congrats on the 4. My favorite knife of all my knives and the ESEE lineup.

I've been wearing a pair of Danner 452 GTXs. They are lightweight (under 3lbs I think) and can take a beating.

Congrats on the 4.

I really love my Keens. Out of the box comfort and plenty of room in the toe box. The last pair I bought were the Oregon PTC hiking boots put many a miles on them already and not a problem.

I throw in another vote for Merrell's.
Got a pair of Chameleon Stretch's a little while back. Best all around pair of shoes/boots I've ever owned. Bought them strictly for hiking but they haven't left my feet since i got them!

I have an older pair of Merrell Moab Mid Gore Tex XCRs that I really like. I am a pretty casual hiker but I've worn them in snow, through shallow streams and wet ground and they've kept my feet dry. People have been pretty harsh on the newer versions in reviews and say the GoreTex fails so I don't know if the quality has dipped. I have never had any problems with them and they are pretty light and comfortable.

Thanks for all the info. Im really liking the merells from what iv read on them so far. But i have seen a few complaints about the sole tearing loose from the rest of the shoe. those same people also said the chameleon 2 is better than the 3...any of you have experience with either? also has anyone tried the Barefoots? Personally i like to keep my feet 'grounded', helps me feel more aware of my surroundings.

Just wondering if I'm the only one...but did you find that your chameleon's ran about a 1/2 size too small. My 11s felt more like 10 1/2s.
