New appreciation for small blades

I love small knives. They will do most of what we need. But…sometimes a small knife is just too, for lack of a better word, small. So it's easy to just keep a big boy around for those just in case times.

The peanut stopped my trying out of other trad patterns and even moderns to some degree. I carry one 7 days a week. I can putt it through areas with metal detectors and security and no one cares...its important when you live and work around NYC.

I was doing some work around the house this weekend...
but this little project really helped me appreciate just how useful a small blade can be, and for me, even more so than a larger one.
Sorry for editing out most of your post for brevity, but this is my situation as well. When I am doing home handyman tasks, which are not my forte, I find that a modern one-hand opener and a Case Small Stockman (63033 pattern in jigged brown Delrin) make excellent companions.

Having the three small blades on the Case knife makes it a great tool for detail work and getting into tight spaces, and the different blade shapes come in very handy. My project was stripping some old paint in the shower one weekend and the small blades were great for getting into corners and crevices to scrape out old paint and caulk.

I don't carry my Peanuts much because when I need a smaller knife I grab that small stockman.

Yeah, I hear that. We have some of the same security conditions here in Washington D.C. at every federal building entrance. All the Smithsonian museums and National Gallery of Art, Union station. When my peanut does get a second look, it's been called cute, pretty, and even by one young guard, "old timey cool."

I'll take any break I can get.

I'm acutally glad for the unread thread option in bf. At the time when I was figuring out what to edc I would not have looked at the traditional forum. But there was this giant and what I thought silly at the time cult of the peanut thread...it was massive. So just out of sheer curiosity I picked one up and glad I did. Also glad that someone else figured a getaround to the metal detector situation. The first few times I had forgotten it was in my pocket and when I threw it in the dish that collects all of your pocket stuff no one cared.

The peanut continues to open packages, cut stray thread, clip coupons from a bj's book and slice up food and fruit for me at lunch with aplomb!

I gotta get a peanut lol! Its probably one of the only patterns I don't have, I've been thinking about it lately looks like a good time to pull the trigger.

As for me and small blades, I also find the little ones get more use. My favorite knives and patterns lean heavily toward a knife with both a large blade and small blade, feels like I'm covered on both ends that way. But unless its cutting food, the small one gets the most use.

Is that yellow one a Case TinyTrapper? Nice!

Yep. It was what Case calls "bone stag" but I didn't like the dark grooves, so I scraped them out so it just looks like worn natural bone. The one above it is the Tiny Wharncliffe Trapper. They make a Peanut look big by comparison. :)

Thanks I like it! I may just get one for the fun of it. :)

Oh, now I rember... Why do Barlows come with that little Pen blade? LOL!

Answer, because 2 knives are heavier than one:

Peanuts and such are gummint legal. No one bats an eye at them.

I don't hear the Conan theme music when I pick up a peanut at a knife shop. It still cuts. My dad likes small knives, but tends to lose them in the washing machine.

The peril of owning a small knife...

I work in a law office. Small knives are all I ever carry on a daily basis. My 1 bladed pemby and esquire are my go to's w the occasional g10 manbug appearance. I actually use my esquire so much I am contemplating a version w premium handles for my classier occasions

My problem isn't with the small blade, but rather the handle that usually accompanies said blade.

I like big blades and I like small blades. Horses for courses. Depends on the job.

But, I always dislike small handles, some more than others. Blame it on my big XL hands. The tougher the material being cut, the more important the size of the handle becomes to me. This combo works for me.

Depends on the knives!! I'll bet my combo is weight comparable to most larger jacks. But, my solution puts 2 tools in my pockets, which isn't everybody's cup o' tea either.
