I took in a couple this week that I’m really tickled with and thought I’d share a few quick pics. My new arrivals are a Case smooth bone barlow and a Case single blade full size trapper. Per the previous owner, the barlow is 1995 vintage and the trapper 2002.

I already owned a Case barlow and have really liked it, so I was predisposed to pick up another. They are solid little knives and one feature that particularly appeals to me is how thin the main clip is. It takes a great edge and is an impressive little slicer. My new smooth bone version has the identical blade and I look forward to sharpening it up as well.

I have owned several Case full size trappers and each one has been a quality knife which I’ve enjoyed. But for me, they always ended up feeling too big in the pocket and I'’ve wound up selling them all. When I got a chance at a single blade version, which seem fairly scarce, I jumped. While the same length as its 2-bladed brothers, it weighs a good bit less and is considerably slimmer as well (but still a nice handful). The icing on the cake, though, is the file work. I likewise haven’t come across a lot of Case knives with this feature and, while I’m no connoisseur of the art, it strikes me as very well done and really beautiful.

As you guys well know, it’s always a gamble buying knives online and I’ve had my share of disappointments once I have them in hand, but these two Case beauties have made my week!

Thanks for looking.

Great haul! Love both of them.....but man that 1B trapper is awesome. Do you know if it is factory or if it was modified. CV?

Thanks,

Jim

That Trapper certainly looks like a premium knife, the file-work is very appropriate and endows it with a top aura! Are they production knives or ones that have been worked on by a craftsman?

Thanks, Will

Congrats, Andrew; those ARE two Case beauties!:thumbup:

Andrew, seems like everyone likes the trapper, but I can't look away from the barlow! The bone and shield combo screams elegance to me. Definitely post up in the barlow thread, and congrats!

Thanks for all the nice comments, gents. A couple of you asked if the file work was from Case or an independent craftsman. Don't know but I messaged the seller to see if he does.

Also, the seller stated that the trapper blade is stainless, but I don't see the usual Case "SS" on the tang, so I also asked him how he knew that. I could find out easily enough with a quick patina test, but I'm not yet ready to do anything to this little beauty!

The trapper is probably a 2blade with the spey and a backspring pulled off and filework done by an individual. I don't suppose there is a pattern number on the back of the main?

The barlow is the 1995 1st Limited Edition Series. Only one not marked as such and they have gotten very collectible.

Very nice pair.

My thought exactly. Never seen single blade trapper by Case and the filework made me think of customization. Anyway nicely done and very unique. Congrats on both new attractive knives.

Case did a run in 2002 of single-blade knives based on some of their patterns that normally had multiple blades, so it is possible it was one of those. I know I have seen the 6147 (single clip blade version of the '47 Stockman pattern) from that 2002 run for sale occasionally. So it may have been from that run, or a SFO done during the same time. The bone on that one is gorgeous in the barehead handles.

I didn't know that, thanks for the info. Did they have filework?
Mike

No idea about the filework. It was a limited release in 2002 they called the "Single Blade Jacks" collection. I have seen the 6175 (on the large stockman frame) and 6147 (on the regular stockman frame), in a Peachseed Jigged Antique Bone handle pattern, which doesn't match the bone on Andrew's trapper there. Neither of those was bareheaded.

I am not sure what all patterns were done in that collection, or what the variants were.

Edit: Found this old thread here that lists the knives:

http://www.bladeforums.com/forums/showthread.php/765381-need-2002-case-catalog-info

Apprently it was actually called the "Double X Slimline" family. Interestingly enough, there is no regular Trapper mentioned, so I guess Andrew's knife was not part of that run.

Mike L., Mike B., and John, thanks for the additional info. on these knives. Sorry, no pattern number on the main.

I did hear back from the owner but unfortunately he had no more info. on the history of the trapper. From what you gents say it sounds like either an individual removed the spey and did the file work, or possibly it was a SFO.
