new axe incoming....

A little update so far. Got the axe today, and was not happy to see the handle didn't fill the eye of the axe. From the bottom of the head there was a bout a quarter inch of void between the handle and the eye, I could damn near fit my pinky in there. I don't know much but seems to me like that could cause some trouble, so I figured I would pop it off and see what the issue was. Which brings us to awesome number 2, the fool idjit that hung the head used a cross wedge as the actual wedge, took 2 hours and half the tools in the shop to get the head free. Completely destroyed the handle which is sad because it might have been ok for another axe. Now to quest for a replacement handle and hope a novice hanging is to blame for the poor fit, not Some defect with the axe.

Plumb would also be my number one suspect as the maker. They are always very good as far as I know. Its really a nice looking axe but you will still need to re-wedge and take a file to the bit.

I missed your last post. Sounds like a boys axe handle on a full size axe. That's probably why it was cross wedged. No big thing, handles are temporary.

Yeah it is a 4 pound head, little big for a boys axe handle. I have got a couple more on the way that might need new handles so going to wait to get them all together and order whatever handles I think I Need. House handle really the only name I see pop up a lot for getting handles, anyone know of any others?

Man hope it not a 4 pounder, on a 27 inch handle that would be mean.

howsabout the competitive choppers who use 6lb axes on 30" handles? one of the skinniest dudes i know chops through hundreds of trees every trails season with a 5lb axe on a 29" handle. the big head just takes a little getting used to, but they do more work per chop if they are ground correctly and your handle has been thinned so that the center of mass is in the head. you will actually spend LESS energy chopping through a log with a larger head than with a smaller one, if everything is done correctly.
