New backpack

I like tacticool gear as much as the next guy (I EDC a Maxpedition Condor II), but I don't think it's the most practical equipment for outdoor activities. It is heavy, it is noisy, it is hot, and it is (or can be) expensive. A small internal frame pack or large daypack is so much better than a tactical pack if you plan on using it for any serious hiking or hunting. A pack like Gregory, Kelty, or REI-brand would be good choices.

I love my Condor II and have used it on daytrips several times. Just for reference, I am 6'2" and the waist strap would wrap at the bottom of my rib cage if I were to use it. And even if it did fit, its just a nylon strap anyway, and wouldn't provide much support.

Good luck with your shopping. Anxious to hear what you decide on.

Thanks, I Googled around and think I understand about tactical packs and MOLLE/PALS. Not something I need, but I pick packs that appeal to me, so understand the visceral appeal factor.

Regarding waist belts, I can go on and on, but internal stays or framesheets are best for transferring load to your hips. I have a long torso and find most packs too short. I can highly recommend Osprey Kestrel, Deuter ACT Trail, and LL Bean Bigelow, which come in several sizes, and all of which I've used for multiple backcountry days.

I like my 511 Rush.

You hit the nail on the head. A lot of these tactical packs, are bulletproof but are very heavy empty. I found it better to go with the lighter nylon packs, so much more comfortable so you can go farther.

I looked at some of the lightweight packs myself but for my style of travel I'll stick to heavy and bullet proof, I do not think the light weight packs would hold up for me.

I have a G1 Express and it's the pack I use more than any other. Absolutely fantastic construction, weight distribution, etc.

I just received mine (w/ non-padded, pals belt)- very impressed w/ the workmanship, looking forward to putting it through it's paces :)
