I just got my Trunk Show scores - a pair of blades in Bama Clay, and I gotta say, I liked the old version of the Bama Clay coating a lot better.

The new stuff has a very rough texture that seems like it would be a lot more likely to show wear, and more likely to bind up when cutting material too. It almost feels like sandpaper.

The old stuff was very smooth, and very durable. It slid through materials like butter because it was nice and slick and didn't bind up.

Jerry, if you're listening - PLEASE bring back the smooth Bama Clay! It's way more practical for a user knife.

Do we need to put you on suicide watch? You and that bama clay are ...er...were... a match made in busse heaven. :D

some thoughts on the Bama clay. the older finish was darker and actually had black spots mixed in with the dark clay color... looked pretty neat.
the newer stuff is very coarse like sandpaper and lighter in color.
I was going to get a TB in bama clay and black paper but when I saw the new bama clay at the creek, decided against it. "went with sage"
the old stuff looked better but had a shine to it, new stuff is lighter but doens't look like it would reflect light, but the sand paper would definatly be rough on the slice. the up side, is I did actually file my nails at knob creek with the finish.

This sounds like the older tan coating. It had the same sandpaper feel, but it was/is a very durable coating.

First, let me say that, despite the thumbsdown and the griping, I still dig these knives, and once I've used them enough to wear the finish down to a smoother one, they will probably grow on me even more. But "filing your nails" on these blades definitely sounds about right. They are the roughest knife finish I have ever seen.

The new guys: MS and AD, both about .180 thick.

The whole family - NMSFNO and FSH are both the old style bama clay finish, which I like a lot better.

Spine shot - .275, .245, .180, .180

A closeup - notice how the AD and MS don't reflect much light, while the FSH has more glare on it.

Another closeup both are textured but the MS is much rougher, to the point where I think it will negatively affect slicing.

And despite all my griping, a big THANK YOU to the awesome hog/dog proxy that hooked me up with these blades. They are still sweet even if I'd prefer the old coating.

I see your point. Looks almost like there is more gritty material in the mix and less liquid material on the new batch.

Gotta say that is a pretty nice looking set you have going there.

Would look better in satin/bp IMO:eek:;)

With a good edge I don't think the coating will affect slicing enough for a difference in performance to be noticed. For what it's worth, the new Bama Clay coating looks better than the old in my opinion :D.

Well those aren't my only Busse's - those are just my Bama ones.

I even have one in Satin / Black Paper :barf: ;) :D

Well if you would have got them in satin and BP you wouldnt be complaining now would you??:D;)

The black finish is pretty rough and crinkly, isn't it? I have one in the pipeline.

The newer black blades I have are nowhere near as rough as the Bama. They have a slight crinkle to them, but this stuff is crazy.
