new BATAC... question

Hey all, I recently ordered the BATAC CG from BCS. It will be my first Busse, and I had a few questions as it is yet to arrive....

I noticed on the site it seems pretty thin compared to the LE version... will I be disappointed by how thin this knife is at all? I already have a Swamp Rat Mini Mojo and was amazed at the thickness (1/4") when it first came.

Second, I have a lot more folders than I do fixed, and for all these a Spyderco Sharpmaker seems to work great. Is there any down-side to using the Sharpmaker on a Busse or Swamp Rat?

And lastly, does anyone have a picture of the one I got?... it's the BATAC w/ black crinkle, mag G-10 black-tan handle.... I can't wait!!

Thanks for the help.

I don't think that you will be disappointed. The CG is still a handful, and much more practical than the LE for an all round using knife, IMO.

you will not be dissapointed with the thickness.

the le is significantly thicker, but the cg is plenty thick. keep in mind we are talking in the hundredths of an inch. the le with the mags is noticeably fatter in the hand than the cg, even with the mags, imo.

i have found the sharpmaker does fine at maintaining the edge, however recently started using the apex edge pro. no comparison.

the spyderco wont get any knife shaving sharp on its own. it must be supplemented with a strop of some sort.

and congrats on the score!!!!

here's another dumb question... what is a strop, and what does it do?

a strop is a piece of leather, often attached to wood or some other hard media.

like when a barber runs his straight razor across a long piece of leather? when used properly, it will put as fine an edge on a blade as is possible.

a shaving sharp edge is not the best for utilitarian tasks, though. it can be fragile and deform.

for the vast majority of people, i would think the sharpmaker would do fine.

You will not be disappointed at then "thinness" of the knife. For most purposes, the CG version is still too thick. The LE is just plain absurd. And the black/tan handle is the best color combo one they've offered.
Use it for a few months and if you don't like it, sell it. You'll probaby get more than your money back.

yeah, read the posts around here, picture should be posted in one of the topics.

Wow Tony that DC/Pumpkin Meaner is hot, got a closer shot ?

OK I'll do it now.

Given the light and how lit I am this is as good as it gets for now.

The first it just on a flat bed scanner and may be the best image.

I will have to disagree with that statement. The sharpmaker can get knives hair splitting sharp on it's own.

It is pretty useless for reprofiling an edge though.

I think you will be very happy with everything about your new knife including the thickness of the blade. I purchased an BATAC LE and if anything, I think the thickness of the LE might be overkill. It is certainly well suited for anything and everything I will use it for. It's just that it's a little heavier than I expected. That said, I still like it a lot. Enjoy your new acquisition and let us know what you think when it arrives. -DT

I have the exact same combo coming in and was also wondering about using my sharpmaker. Good to read that it will work well. I also agree that a sharpmaker can very easily put a shaving edge on a blade. I maintain all my folders and a few kitchen knives with it and they all shave easily.

maybe my technique is bad, but i have never achieved that level of sharpness without the aid of a strop.

agreed on the second statement.
