Have just noticed a new forum called "Battleblades" hosted by a
special forces fella. I won't be visiting it as I have no interest in that
type of info, but I'm sure others will enjoy it. I just hope that someday
there will be a slipjoint forum here at Bladeforums for those of us
who are interested in more than a forum like "Battleblades" can offer.
It does strike me as odd that there is room for forums like this ,but
not for slipjoints..........sigh........

Maybe someday........

The Battle Blades forum was started I think in part because the urban Jungle forum was a very active forum, but closed for reasons other than lack of interest. So, don't think of this as us getting a forum instead of a slipjoint forum, this is filling the gap of a lost forum.

I like the idea someone had here about putting [slipjoint] in front of threads and ralking about them more. That will show quite easily how much interest there is in a slipjoint forum, I think. I have started doing that with my slipjoint threads.

I'll put in another vote
for a slipjoint forum!!!

Seems all I do in the general
forum is look for threads with
slipjoint in the title...

Yep, slipjoints are good. A Slipjoint Forum is even better...

Just MHO,

Check out the forum at the other place if you think you really need one. It started out okay, but seems to be hitting a rut already. Just my opinion though. Maybe Spark is right and there isn't really enough interest to support a slipjoint forum. I mean, there already is one and what's it doing for ya?

Pretty bad anology there. And why do you refer to it as 'the other forum'...you can say knifeforums if ya want. www.knifeforums.com even.

Anyways, its not just the slip joint folder forum there that hits a rut, its the traffic that BF gets vs. KF. It just isnt the same. Even the KF general forum has times where there might be 10 or 20 new posts a week, where BF general forum gets a ton of posts in several hours. Using your logic, a slip joint forum here would no doubt get alot of posts each day then.

I doubt this forum will see a slip joint section anytime soon though, which is to bad, I think it would do quite well with the huge amount of traffic BF gets.

Right on, Richard. I've noticed, too, that several of the more prolific posters that participate in BF are quick to reply to s/j threads. This would seem to indicate a potential for a constant level of lively discussion in a s/j forum.

Guys, I've been monitoring this since the last time it's come up and I'm just not too sure that a dedicated slipjoint forum would work. I hate focusing on something that specific, as "balkanization" is not what the forums need.

That said, I'm considering a "Traditional Folders" forum, however, which would include slipjoints and the like...

Kevin

Spark, a "Traditional Folders" forum might be a workable compomise
that would serve your readers better with the added benefit of "other"
types of non-tactical cutley also having a home. As you can see both
the interest and the moderators are available. The more you have to offer
the more traffic there will be..........

Forumites.......How do you feel about a forum such as Spark has suggested??

By the way ..........
What does "balkanization" mean?? I've not heard that before.

It's a folding knife that relies on spring tension to hold the blade open. Think Stockman,Trapper,etc....

HTH:):D.

Balkanization means the splitting up of some thing. It comes from the Balksans. We used to have Yugoslavia, now we have Serbia, Croatia, Bosnia, and who nows what we'll have tomorrow!

We don't want to split the forums up so much such that the slipjoint people just hang out there, and the FRN handled crew hang out in their forum, and the half blind peg legged, been to alien mothership for anal probe crew hang out in their forum, you know?

As far as a "traditional folder" forum goes, I thought that would be a place for things liek trappers and stockmans, as well as SAKs and other such items.

"Traditionals" works for me. It would allow the discussion of slipjoints, as well lockbacks, which often come up in the same discussions.

I don't have a wealth of knowledge on these traditional knives, but it would interest me as a forum I would frequent.

Yup--slipjoints, lockbacks, friction folders, etc. There are a number of makers producing current beautiful versions that would be considered, well, 'Customs' (please excuse the blanket reference), and this is an area that is regaining interest with collectors as well.

Count me in.

Traditionals: Knives your grandpa would carry.

I like the idea of a Traditional forum.

I have been reading a lot of the slipjoint posts at kinfe forum but I have not signed on yet. I like it here. I have several tactical knives but I have more slipjoints. My son and I have been cruising for more "traditional" knives and collecting them. A traditional forum would be most outstanding.

Thanks Dean

Ok, so everyone's agreed that a traditional forum would be a better idea than a slipjoint specific forum? Sounds like a winner.

I'll do some research and hopefully this is an idea that will work.

Kevin

Spark, I think it would be a fantastic idea. I have been spending a lot of time over on the KF slipjoint forum and have really enjoyed it. I also like lockbacks and even friction folders. It is my firm belief that this would be a very well used forum.

Boy, I don't know ... seems like quite a gamble to me. There have only been eighty-some threads started on the "Slipjoints Only" forum in the last 3 weeks over at Knife Forums. Maybe we could make it go, though. And by calling it "Traditional Folders", it wouldn't look like we are copying the other guys' ideas.
