The mail lady delivered by new Baby BDC today and I thought I'd post my initial impressions. One word that aptly describes the BDC is "stout." Quite a study little knife. I like sturdy.

The knife did not come particularly sharp and when I attempted to bury it in some Oak firewood, it did not sink into the wood. It did leave an indentation in the wood. I realize this knife lacks the heft to be an effective chopper but I thought it would at least stick, even if not deeply. I then got out my Bark River Golok, which I thought was pretty sharp and attempted the same thing. Sadly, I got the same result. Maybe both knives may need some time on the strop.

One of the questions I had about the BDC, before seeing it in person, was how many fullers it had, one or two. Well, how about 2.5. On one side of the blade a second fuller is somewhat visible while on the other side, I see only one fuller. Is this an anomaly with HI blades?

I am really impressed with the fit of the sheath. I've never had a kuk before and really didn't know what to expect with regard to the leather covered wood sheath. The knife fits snugly and the rig seems secure.

I've started sharpening this little guy and I see some improvement on one side of the blade but the other side still needs work. I think it will be shaving sharp before long.

Keep at it. Sharpening a khuk takes patience when you're doing it by hand. Glad you got one!! Welcome to the club!

I have two Baby BDCs, and love both of them. Neither came terribly sharp, but due to their size, they are easier to sharpen than their bigger brethren. They are quite sturdy!

Remember than these are hand forged knives, so some level of imperfection is to be expected.
