Howdy Campers!

After much deliberation and research into fixed-blades, I finally pulled the trigger on one. I had a hard time choosing between a Becker and an ESEE, but finally decided on both. I would buy a larger blade from one manufacturer and a smaller knife from the other. My decision for the large was the BK-2, which I ordered only yesterday, and was planning on picking up an Izula to compliment it, but then I started to focus on the small fixed-blade offerings also from Becker…

I like the look of the BK-11. I also like the BK-14 ‘Eskabar’, which seems to offer the best of both the BK-11 and the ESEE Izula (note: the Izula is not out of the running yet.) My question: which smaller fixed-blade would you choose to compliment a BK-2?

I like the option of ‘scout’ carry, which is to say carrying my main fixed-blade horizontally on my belt at the small of my back. I find it the most comfortable method of carry when not humping my main ruck. Can the sheath that comes with the BK-2 be easily modified to accommodate scout carry (I'm right-handed, btw)? If not, are there any affordable after-market offerings you could recommend for this? I love the look of the Hedgehog custom sheath, but for the price (), I’d rather pay a few bucks more and buy a small Sebenza! Perhaps I should just be more patient and wait for my BK-2 to actually arrive before I start with such questions… :o

Thanks, fellas! :)

Welcome! You would not be disappointed with any knife from either Becker/Kabar or ESEE. Both are great brands with nothing but great knives. I have the Izula and it's a really good little knife. I do like the way the Izula feels with the micarta handles as my hands are not very large. My personal opinion and definitely not shared by everybody is that the BK-14 would be more comfortable than the BK-11. The bottle opener on the BK-11 tends to be bothersome for some. The BK-14 is more blade-heavy than the Izula as well. It really depends on your preference. I can't speak on the mid-range blades as I don't have any from ESEE and only have the large BK-09 from Becker. I can tell you, however, that the BK-09 performs GREAT with only a 3/16" thick blade. The 1/4" thick blade with the BK-02 will only be more durable.

Again, any choice from Becker/Kabar or ESEE will provide you with great cutting power and endurance with cutting ability.

Doesn't really matter which one(s) you get first, next or last, you're gonna get them all eventually. Just do an eenie meenie minnie moe and get the ball rollin'. Before long you'll be broke, but well prepared to kill anything that moves, and even inanimate objects like lawnmowers and cinder blocks and such. Above all else remember, WE NEED PICTURES!! ;)

Welcome to the madness. (Has anyone ever made a THIS IS SPARTA remix with ethans face and THIS IS BECKERLAND!!!!). I had the Izula, 14 and 11 in hand and finally decided to get the 14. I don't like the handle on the 11 at all. The bottle opener always seems to get in the way. The izula really looked ridiculously small in my hand, i have glove size 10. I wanted a slightly beefier blade. The 14 was the answer! Great edc knife, i have really been missing it in these past few days (my girlfriend didn't want to bring me another possibility to injure myself to the hospital)

So if you want a trusty little friend that appears to be able to destructinate a door just by sheer awesomeness, go with the 14. Try to get your hands on an izula, try it out, and i believe you will find yourself wanting a little bit "more knife". That would be the bk-14.

Sorry if this post sounds weird in places, my phone's keyboard and my fingers seem to be natural enemies.

tek loc is the answer to the bk2 sheath. you can mount it horizontal or vertical. Blade tech makes them.

as for the small knife, i like the 14. I like that the izula can be bought as a kit w/ scales. but you can't go wrong with any of them. you can always sell/trade it if it turns out you don't like it.

Welcome to the madness!

The thing about those little knives is the handle size. For some, the handles are too short, thus the Izula II, that extra 1/2" made the difference for enough people.
I like the Eskabar, with Izula scales better than without. Again, it depends on the person. I find that without scales the BK-14 hurts my hand during hard use. I prefer a thicker handle overall, I guess a good paracord wrap could be an improvement.

Dust that snow off and come on in the house. I like the BK11, but I know a lot of folks that carry a mora to compliment their BK2. They've got it covered pretty good. You guys have weird bacon, what's the story there?

You're firmly in the realm of "can't go wrong". I now own a BK14 (thanks to Mr. Becker's generosity) and that one rocks too but my original BK2 partner is ...

... the mighty BK11. Can't lose with that knife. I've cleaned deer, and sliced many an apple not to mention venison steak with it. It's a good one.

Welcome to the sickness. I think you'll be happy with either the Izula or ESKabar. I have both and both are great knives.

My thanks for all the great feedback and welcomes so far!

Weird bacon sure is tasty and goes good with beer. Your fried chicken is pretty finger-lickin' good too! Say 'hi' to the Colonel for us, eh? :D

I think i'm gonna like it here...

I'm on it. And I'm trying that bacon/beer thing too. Welcome to Beckerland, you're going to fit in quite well....

I agree with the others, the 11 really fits the bill, I have izzys and the 14 but I really like the 11, but again if you're looking at an esee think of the 3...............

I like the BK 11 just fine. I finally have one I'm gonna keep ( I keep gifting them out). That having been said the BK 14 is the one I carry everyday and most nights, yep sleep with it in my pocket. I hear good things about the ESEE's and I have a real har..... Hankering for an RC4. Don't need it but, want it.

For general all around use I prefer the Necker (11) or Eskabar (14) but if you clean a lot of small game methinks you will appreciate the Izula a bit more.....Wether it's a Becker or an ESSE the quality is definitely there.....

I am glad you showed up in or little neighborhood and PLEASE come back often........

BTW where in Canada do you hail from..........

All Best....

Welcome.
You can't go wrong with either brand.
I pretty much EDC an IZULA with pocket sheath or belt clip sheath I modified. Not much that knife can't do.

Thank you for the warm-welcome, sir! I'm originally a prairie boy, born in Manitoba, but grew up in Northwestern Ontario where my Pa had a small beef cattle farm in addition to his full-time job (yep, that's bush country up there.) Now I hang my hat in Southeastern Ontario in a small city called Kingston (the original capital of Canada, btw.) Funny how folks out this way call The Great Outdoors 'the woods' or 'the forest'... very romanticised. Back home, it's just 'the bush.' Magical elves live in the forest, but mosquitoes and blackflies live in the bush... big bitey ones. :D

Wow, good thing that the editing doesn't render the whole post useless. Did you decide on anything yet? Has the BK-2 arrived?

i haven't tried any other small essee or beckers, but i can say that my eskabar is wonderful for edc with a nice paracord wrap.
