Have the opportunity to score a rat 5 in d2. How's d2 for a woods knife? Too brittle? Love the lines tho. Wish esee would've keep up for their 5, it looks good with the choil

D2 would not be my first choice for a hard use knife. Might be great, but I've seen enough dime sized chip outs to scare me off.

My every day is D2 steel(Benchmade Bone Collector), I really like it. I think if you get it you won't be disappointed.

clich. i've seen the D2 ontarios experience catastrophic failure when used too hard. if i was you i would avoid it.

D2 is a great cutter/slicer -- it's not so great for chopping.
It'll hold a functional edge for a good long while, but does not hold "hair popping sharp" for long due to the nature of the grain structure.
So long as you don't go for an ultra-thin profile 2000 grit polish, you shouldn't have problems with chipping.
(as in, stay away from 15 degree bevels -- 20 degrees on a side will perform well enough and not chip)

thanks guys i passed on it. was real sweet looking but i was worried about being brittle when put through the paces that i do to the bk2. oh well no matter how good the price was, its still a bad deal if it breaks on me

Golf tournament over. Tucked into a dispersed campsite outside of Prescott AZ.... Wife's suggestion. Good thing too as I had enough to drink that I wouldn't have driven back to Phoenix anyway. Got my 10 with me. Ima go start a campfire 'n lissen to the crikkits.

Hardened to the same measure:
D2 has about half the toughness of O1, but like 4 times the wear resistance.
A2 has the same toughness as O1, plus wear resistance halfway btw O1 and D2.

I'd pick A2 all day. (in fact I'm making several A2 knives, and later will try some burly ones)
That's by the numbers with only limited personal data, tho I did put a disappointing chip in my D2 Camillus BK-11.

D2 should do well in shock-free situations with a lot of meat behind the working edge. I'd expect it to be better in torsion-free bits, like lathe tooling, than in a rock'em sock'em batonning woods knife.

Got a sitter for the tricycle motor and got shocks and rear control arms ordered for the Jeep. Now I just need to get my tires located and ordered before I get squared away for the gathering.
