Mine also came sharp. The spring is a little softer than I would prefer but ok. I happen to hate the look of barlows with long bolsters and prefer single-blade slippies.
I added a swedge and shortened and modified the handle and now I think the lines are much more graceful but still allows 4 finger grip for my L/XL hands. Love it, carrying it today! Bad phone pic sorry.
Next gonna replace the handle scales once I decide between wood or jigged black micarta.20180403_141219_Film3-1.jpg

Well, I hope you enjoy that Proper-ly …:)

Nice work on the handles and swedge there, I'm pretty happy with how the handle is setup, only thing I've done recently is to make an angle at the start of the edge so when material falls into that small space, it doesn't get caught/hung up, but slides up and onto the edge.

That looks nice Fishface5! I did the same thing to mine awhile ago, I filed off the two end humps and matched the beveled edge to streamline line it more, Love mine and can't wait to get the clip point red g10 one.

A friend at work looked mine over and said ' if it was assisted opening and had a pocket clip, I'd buy one'
Some folks just never get it :)

The addition of swedges and removing those ridiculous handle contours make these modified propers look more like their name suggests.

Arrived today, very nice, while I've always been a wharncliff kinda guy, I do like a nice point often and so I picked the clip point for that reason, working on a bobtail fob for it tonight.

The swedge is not sharpened, there is about 1mm of flat spot along the spine of the swedge

Arrived nice and sharp, I do think they have stepped up their game in the sharpening dept. for sure.

Gary, that swedge improves the look of that blade immensely! Nice work!

For me, the handle is just right, but then my hands are not everyone's hands, not wimpy but not Andre the Giant either. I like the fact they put a small guard before the blade as it serves two purposes, obvious one to protect you from accidentally sliding up and onto the blade, and that can happen too easily. Secondly when closed the guard then protects your hands and pockets from the end of the tang, so it's not a sunken tang but protected from that small protrusion, not a bad thing either. The way the handle swell out at the butt doesn't prevent you from gripping, not as if they made a matching bump like the guard there, that would have been something I would have evened out if it were, but this widening provides a bit wider handle to fill your hand since the thickness of the handle is quite thin, you need something to hold on to.

So, right now I'm pretty happy with this one, also I like the fact that the blade is not too long, longer blades in slip joints can sometimes get in their own way where this you can control the work a little better.

I can’t help but wonder if some “traditionalists” aren’t put off, not by any aspect of the knife’s design, but with Benchmade’s audacity to name it Proper Slipjoint. I wonder with a different name, if it might not have been better received.

I grabbed one up after seeing photos of Gary’s, and got a nice price using a membership discount at a retailer I’m not sure I’m able to mention here. I like it a great deal more than I expected. When first announced, I wasn’t terribly interested. But it’s a nice design, very nice steel, light, ergonomic, and sleek and unadorned in appearance. It’s a knife that feels like a user, if that makes sense. This may be a knife you need to handle to truly appreciate.

A different name might have been a better idea, naming knives has always been a troubling thing, some names fit, others makes you tilt your head and brings a dazed look into your eyes....

My first thought was that a "Proper" knife is a slipjoint anyway, so Benchmade was just openly admitting that fact. :D:D
