Somebody once said that a big knife is a lot better at small knife chores than a small knife is at big knife work. I find that I carry a a small or Med size FB (i.e. Fiddleback nessie) when I'm hiking, but most of the time that I'm wearing a knife its when I'm working on my property and than its almost always a big knife or the ATAX. A big knife is just handy around a camp or for working outside (and besides, big knives are just very cool)....

I had a bit of a problem re-sheathing the knife the first time too. Thought I fixed it.... guess not, sorry. :(

No worries Koyote Girl. Like I said it was just a little bit of the lip I was catching that probably got that way because of the way I tried to re-sheath it the first time I used it. A small little touching up on it and it now works great.

Okay, this morning I went out to the Greenway trail system, not far from where Magnussen lives. Anyhow, it was a bit of a change of scenery from my usual haunt, and there is always a bunch of things to clear off the trail. What a perfect use for the Leuku!

Still having a fascination with piggy back rigs and decided that the Breeden kat would ride with the Leuku. Well, these two fit together rather nicely I think.

Now, I'm not quite used to a knife this long on my belt so it did feel a bit funny to me. However, the weight of this thing is awesome. I never once felt that I had a big weight on my hip. This leuku will pack very nicely in a backpack also. One really starts to get an appreciation of a thinner stock knife when carrying it. Today I walked for 4.5 km with the leuku on my belt and I can say that it is a good carry knife. Caution - this isn't a very people friendly rig ;)

Did a bit more chopping with a good sized branch. It took a few minutes to get through. The sweet spot is about 1/3 below the tip. The leuku is very comfortable at chopping. Here, the large barrel shaped handle provides lots of protection for the hands and keeps vibration to a minimum. Again, it is nice to chop with a long knife like this. It isn't as fast or efficient as an axe, but you can get through some pretty big stuff with this blade. I would say on the big wood it is better then the RC-6 by quite a bit and a bit below the SOD in chopping.

Notching worked quite well with this one too!

Where the Leuku really did well is on saplings and clearing the springy stuff. This is where the hybrid aspect of machete and long knife really comes in to play. Christof sent me an e-mail today saying that his goals for this knife was to be exactly that. I'll quote him here: "a scandihoovian temperate forest version of a machete as an all purpose wilderness tool." I think that describes it pretty well :D

Okay the rest of these are just some walk pics. Another shot of the piggy back rig amongst the horsetails.

Deer were nibbling on the bark of the new sumac saplings all along the trail.

It really is a looker, to me it has a timeless quality to the design. I can imagine blades like that on the belts of guys for the last 1500 years in places like Sweden and such.

The handle looks really comfortable to. As for flex well I used to have an RTAK II and had to sell it as it flexed too much, it's why I moved to Busse. I am however being drawn back to thinner blades these days, just need to be a little more careful with them is all.

Okay - no review is complete without a little fire. Afterall, what function is more important for a big knife that a fire right?

Having come back from the walk and posted up my latest stuff here I then went out in the back and set a fire in my little patio pit. I had some knarly old locus from one of our tries that was downed and dried for about a year. Locus sucks as far as burning goes, and that means it has to be broken down small. For the leuku - no problem!

I'm particularly proud of this one batoning session. For anybody asking about the toughness of this blade. Check this out. Split through a Y and massive knot!

Yes the leuku was used to start the fire with a fire steel. I have one of those cheapy Canadian tire army sized firesteels. I have a couple LMFs also, but this cheapy one is particularly parsnickety when it comes to edges to strike. Basically the only thing that works really good is my Vic Soldier awl. The spine on the Leuku produced beautiful sparks on this thing and easily ignited a pile of shavings.

I got so carried away cracking up logs and breaking down sticks that I managed to get wood chips in my rye and coke!

Great knife. I think you should get one!!!!! :D :D

I have to admit that I am not generally a fan of Christof's knives (not the quality though), but I really liked this one the first time that I saw it. Really looks great, glad it is in our country! Did the roundness of the handle twist at all when chopping or was it squared off enough to prevent this?

Might have to see about this one in the future (I don't have any L6 yet, or a leuko and I'm Scandinavian).

Enjoy that knife!

Hey cuts like a kris - there is enough tapering and bit of squaring torwards the pommel end that the handle stays stable in the hand when chopping. That and the wideness of the handle and blade give you lots of control in the hand when striking the survice of the wood. Overall it feels pretty good.

This one is bigger than many of the production ones which usually tend to be 7". This one at almost 10" blade length really does fit into the machete/leuku hybrid. I probably would have gotten squeamish if Christof told me the knife was going to be that long and I was expecting an 8" ish blade. Now that I have it in hand, I really like this big knife. It is light enough to haul, but that extra length just seems to give you the confident to take on the chopping chores.

I have no hesitation recommending this knife to anyone interested in a big leuku.

kgd...you pushed me over the edge with this review:D Just ordered the "kgd Leuku" from Christof (great guy by email even!).

I'll let Christof surprise me with the handle, but I gave him a few options regarding the sheath.

If all goes well, I'll get a chance to put it to work before my little trip to Afghanistan!;)

Thanks again kgd and Christof for finallly getting me off my butt for a good Leuku blade:thumbup:

ROCK6
