I was gifted a new EDC knife for my birthday, a replacement for one I used to have! It's the Gerber STL, or "strong, thin & light" knife.

My original dropped out of my pocket while fixing a broken down car, and being in Eugene, of course a tweaker skittered out of the woodwork like a cockroach and scooped it up the second I drove away from the parking lot.

The other one was used when bought, so this is the first time I've seen the package this knife comes in.

Really, Gerber? It's not a liner lock, it's a frame lock. It even says so on the back of the package!

As you can also see, it has a Titanium-Coated stainless steel handle. Apparently that's a fancy way of saying "black paint." Really, it's a cool little knife, why can't they just tell it like it is? Coated in titanium? That is just utterly ridiculous.

What it really needs is a custom titanium alloy replacement blade, on some bronze washers to replace the plastic ones. That would really make it a super special little knife. And it's really not bad at all, check out that centering:

It has a good detent, too. And the styling is awesome, like a '90s car:

Now to accent that styling with a '90s wallet chain -status ultra long kevlar cord and bronze Predator bead, of the Predator holding a trophy skull.

Yeah that's right, I even snuck a skull in there. :D

Damn good birthday knife. It really does deserve a little custom blade upgrade in Russian Spetznaz ballistic armor titanium alloy 5Al 2Mo 4.5V 1Cr 0.7Fe, and bronze washers.

Ha with the Gerber! My MIL does it all the time. She knows that I'm into knives, so she always gets me one of those knife/multitool clamshell packs from Wally world for Christmas. I just smile and tell her how much I like it!

Happy birthday Mecha!

Bwahahaha! :D

That Predator bead rules.

Happy Birthday, Mecha!

Thanks much! The bead was a gift from a great sword customer.

I've got a drawer full of "thoughts that count" myself.

LOL! In this case it was known that I really do like this little knife and missed the old one, so the thought counted extra.

Happy birthday bro! You should totally put an awesome blade on that thing...

You're right, it's gotta happen. It worked for the W&C Jarbenza GAW! Jarbenza with custom forged 89.5Ti 10Nb 0.5Fe titanium sword alloy blade:

A knife is a knife is a knife. If it cuts it'll make a good user.

I'd say most of the time that's a correct philosophy, but not always. A bad knife can make things harder on you, be very frustrating, even dangerous and can hurt you. I abhor tools that are total crap and don't do their job right and end up causing a lot of trouble. Such as torque wrenches that read wrong, ratchets that lose hold and get your knuckles busted, and knives that function poorly and end up pissing you off or hurting you.

In this case, this little tiny knife is built like a legit framelock knife, and it's waaaay better than the standard-sized typical crappy liner/frame lock knives that I've used.

It was a massive upgrade.

I remember that one. It was a thing of beauty! That is the type of thing I love so much.

It's so over the top awesome to put a blade like that in a schitt handle. Makes the humble Jarbenza a noble companion. It's a "joke" that would be lost on many, but not all.

I love using knives for things they were not intended for - like a Szabo UUK for opening mail or boxes, stuff like that. I also love to see things upgraded to the extreme, even to the point that some would think it ridiculous!

That Ti Jarbenza is one of the most pure distillations of that type of sentiment ever to exist. :D

LOL! You know what would be just out of the stratosphere awesome would be to cast a Jarbenza handle, basically an exact copy in like say platinum, and then put in a blade of rare ti alloy, or Stellite 6K, or even that REX steel everyone is losing their shite over these days. Just the craziest combination possible.

For sure Mecha, quality tools are a pleasure to use and last you a lifetime. Cheap stuff you use once and discard if need be, as long it works safely as it should its good to go would be more accurate. Reminds me of some cheap Torx Set that came with multiples, needed to remove a single T10, got it out once all three T10 bits in the set were broken :D
