New birthday EDC knife!

Oh it's really just basic stuff. First you gotta [CLASSIFIED] while being sure to [REDACTED], and then you [TOP SECRET]. Viola!

:D

Lmao! Fo sho that's it! Can't wait to see it. That blank is looking sweet already, layers are very visible. This is shaping up to be the pimptastic version of the Jarbenza!

73 cuts from Schrade and 100 from Gerber. Higher end steels routinely go 290+. Maxamet goes 500+. You DO get performance for your money with super steels.

Also, can we please stop saying "heat treat"? We're connoisseurs here, it's called tempering.

It's like an alleged car guy referring to his (gasoline) engine as a "motor."

I used to sneer at using the word "motor" to describe a gasoline engine as well, for many years thinking it referred to an electric motor only. Then I realized that it's a latin root word, that means more than either of them:

So it turns out that motor is appropriate for damn near anything, a really great word.

Tempering is what decides how hard/brittle it is. Quench too quickly and it ends up brittle. Too slowly and it's soft.

They like to make it sound very technical, but I think it is more about QC than anything.

You don't say.

So what about annealing, quenching, normalizing, deep cryogenic cycles, etc?

Like I said, tempering is only one part of the total heat treatment. "Heat treatment" is all encompassing. It includes tempering (along with every other step in the heat treatment process - not just the one step of tempering)

In titanium there is also precipitation hardening and aging.

There you go, even more terms added to the lexicon! "Tempering" can't supersede the term "heat treatment" because tempering is just one step of many.

I'm fairly familiar with working simple carbon steels, but titanium is voodoo to me. It's very interesting. I'm going to have to pick your brain sometime if you don't mind. :)

Oh ya, I've been known to run my mouth at great length on the subject, to the annoyance of many.

Shoot me an email if you wouldn't mind. I've been following your work for a long time (as I'm sure you know, duh) and I'd love to shoot the sh!t about all things titanium with a true master!:)

Got it. :D Now back to our regularly scheduled Franken-knife thread.

Thanks for being a spoiled child and throwing a tantrum at Gerber that resulted in you making this knife truly special.

We can’t all do the mature thing every time such as insulting someone in their own birthday thread.

Happy birthday!
I know I used to have a few of those LSTs lying around here, always thought it was a nifty design. I look forward to seeing what you do with it. :)
