NEW BK2 1st gen problems

laughing too hard to type.
yeah? you outta see what i can do with a pencil.
Oh, and I love my BK-2, no problem with the BK-7 sheath I keep it in.
(gotta stay on topic.)

But the BK-7 sheath wasn't designed for the BK-2: the tolerances are different. Why, there's probably even room for your pencil in there.

By the way, what does one use a pencil for nowadays?

okay, i will try to stay as off topic as possible. i am a mentor on a f.i.r.s.t. robotics team. our robot had a structural element that was WAY overbuilt. so, i did a structural analysis on it... by hand... with pencil. it was displayed in our pits and actually made quite a hit. nobody does that by hand. we cot probably 2/3 of the element away and used the weight savings to do other cool nerdy things. ha

did i mention that i like my BK-2?

I understand (which is scary in itself). It's good that you're able to do nerdy things (never touch the stuff, myself).:D

Okay, I'll admit that I use pencils to make rough sketches, although nowadays I tend to use apps that understand Cartesian coordinate systems better than I to make quickies that I can rotate.

Well of course you like your BK-2. Any reasonable person would.

i never learned any of the design software. NONE of it. and i'm amazed my what it can do. our top design student on the team this year did some amazingly brilliant things, then did an amazingly stupid thing. got offered a part time job as a cadd tech and dropped out 6 weeks before graduating.
i can't recall the name of the design software. i'll facebook the team and find out.

did i mention i keep my 2 in a 7 sheath. :D

When I was a lad we had drafting tables, T-squares, triangles, sliderules, and charts... lot's of charts. When programs came out for computers that easily did electronically all the things that we used to laboriously do by hand, well, there was great celebration across the land. I love computers, and would never go back to the old days (although I still have the odd desire to pick up a paintbrush, from time to time).

Tell your student to get his butt back in school. He can always play with software later.

Say, don't you carry your BK-2 in a BK-7 sheath? I think you've mentioned it a time or twelve.

the year is over. he doesn't come around the team anymore. understandable. i was one of the few that was able o connect with him, student or mentor. it was too late by time i found out. good kid, bad decision.

ya know, i think i'll try that! :D i really did like the solution. i like the pouch for a folder, firesteel, whatever. i got a new old stock camillus BK-7 sheath and that's where my 7 resides. the liner in the KA-BAR 7 sheath is more than wide enough to take the .25" BK-2. odd really.

Say — now here's a thought — I wonder if a BK-2 would work in a BK-7 sheath? It might be worth a try. If it works, I'll bet you could get all kinds of goodies in the pouch.

Too bad about the kid. It's never too late though: he can always go back.

like i said, that's why i like the 7 sheath. it was either that or a survival sheath systems sheath for $50 + S&H. being i'm a cheap sob and came upon the camillus sheath for a price hard to beat, i went that route. i love the solution. i just bought a firesteel. i think i'm gonna cut a notch for firesteel use similar to the landshark.

regarding the kid, i never see him anymore. it's up to someone else. if i ever do see him i'll talk to him.

dawsonbob,
the software the kids use to design the roboparts is Autodesk Inventor. anything similar to what you use?

Autodesk Inventor is a pretty sophisticated and capable CAD program; far more sophisticated than the programs that I'm using.

Remember that I've been working mostly as an illustrator and writer for quite awhile, with very little need for CAD capabilities. I've been working mostly in 3D for years now.

Since I've gone back to designing things, I've been working with what I have on hand. Those things include:

A pencil with an eraser.:D

Macromedia FreeHand and Adobe Illustrator for 2D vector art.

Maxon Cinema 4D, a top of the line 3D and animation program.

ViaCad, a medium range (at best) 3D CAD program. While ViaCad works well enough to output files in formats that I can send to manufacturers, it's nowhere near as capable as Autodesk Inventor, which you mentioned earlier.

I really, really need to upgrade my CAD capabilities. I didn't have a need before: now I do.

And that's the story as far as equipment. Oh, I left one out... it's the thing between my ears. I have very good design sense, and can think spatially about conjunction of parts in XY and Z.

i need drawings. i'm usually not so good at visualizing how parts interact.
