New BK2 Owner: Advice on Sharpening and Maintenance

Does anyone have any other "System" type of sharpening tools that work, or is "sharpening"a skill I will have to invest in and learn?

theres lots, kme, dmt, lanskys, spyderco, worksharp, tormek and many many more. and its a skill you need to invest and learn

Stones are great and IMO you have to learn to sharpen on them but I like paper wheels or the worksharp. Wheels have a slight learning curve and the worksharp is pretty straight forward and both can produce a screaming sharp edge.

Stones are great to work worth (I need to get some actually), but require a lot of practice to make or maintain a convex edge. Work Sharp will put a wicked (or screaming) convex edge on, especially if you get more than just the 3 standard grits it comes with. A leather strop (I also need to get one of these as well), with or without compound it will help keep your knife sharp (with either convex or V grinds) without breaking out the power tools or tearing apart your kits to find the stones.

Now, if you don't want a leather strop, some people (myself included) strop on their jeans/hunting pants/duty pants (BDUs), and I heard a while ago that Jerry Fisk strops on his palm, they all work, some better than others maybe.

Take what I say with a grain of salt as there are many masters and I am but a knee high grass hopper.

i am a short-timer here too cdnrogue. so, i had similar questions. i tried sandpaper. i tried stones. i tried the DMT diafold. i tried the EZ-Lap sportsman's rod. what i find has worked best (for me) is diamond and a ceramic finish. can strop, as well. honestly, i prefer the "chef" diamond and ceramic rods, but they are obviously not very practical in the field.

i think sharpening is a rather personal endeavor. find what works best for you. i don't mean that as a "copout" answer. i think that is true. ask 10 people what they prefer and you might get 6-7 different answers.

i have had fun trying different things. and take this with a grain of salt...i don't pretend to be good at sharpening. :D
