New BK2 sharpness?

Well after considering it for a while I decided to take your advice Bikerdave47 and call them up. They offered a discount but it really wasn't that much of one so I figured I paid for a new knife they might as well send me a new knife and not a used one. I'll be returning the one they sent me and ordering a hopefully new one this time.
 
Not that Moose needs backup, but that Bk2 should be a paper shaver. Any piece of carbon steel should take a ridiculous edge. I consider my knives dull unless they cut paper cleanly with no jaggies. Stroppadoodledoo.

I really enjoy sharpening knives. Thats what I attribute my keen edges to. Its not something I try to do quickly, just take my time and study the edge, watch whats happening, and dial that fella in for some scary ass sharpness.

And I strop.

It sounds corny, but you have to become one with the knife, let the knife be an extention of your hand and feel the blade! Feel the contact and pressure on the stone and take you're time. Becoming a good blade sharpener doesn't happen over night Daniel Son! And once you master the sharpening, you will master the grinding and become a Jedi Master like TradeWater :cool:
 
Its probably the shoulders of the coating just before where the bevel starts on the edge. If you just lightly sand down the shoulders of the coating it should slice right through the paper.
 
Wasn't sure if I should start a new thread for this but a question on sharpening the BK11. I know that it has a 15 degree blade angle from the factory and my sharpmaker has the right setup for that but I was thinking of just putting a 20 degree angle on it instead. What would I gain or lose by doing this.

Brawnier edge. I do 25 on mine, but I beat the hell outta em too. 20 will make it slicey.

Heh.

The best way to learn to sharpen is to put the first edge bevel on a new knife blade. It will teach you what's going on *completely*.
Since most folks don't have such things around, a good way to practice would be to pick up a cheap stainless steel ruler at the dollar store and put an edge on it. It will never HOLD the edge, but by spending the time to work on it you'll learn what it's all about. Of course i've never done this, so if you try it be sure to post pics and call me names when it doesn't work. :D
 
I just received my BK2 for Xmas and it had no discernible edge whatsoever. I mean, this thing was dull!! No matter, my plan, after reading and YouTubing the BK2 for several months before buying, is to loosen up the sheath by draws (thereby creating the "the channel" the sheath needs to stop dulling the blade.) I've chopped, pried, batoned and even threw it into a tree a couple times (lol) Anyway, I've removed the paint from the blade and pretty soon I am going to have it professionally sharpened with a convex edge.

Both my bk2s came plenty sharp. but one of them wouldnt shave paper very well either at first. A few minutes on a strop and it shaved hair and paper without issue. Stropping really does make all the difference when your looking for that perfect razor edge.
 
My 7 and 9 came hair popping sharp, but my 2's have needed a little touching up. They're certainly not 'bad' edges though. All of the Beckers I have recieved have come with a very toothy edge, which is great for things like shaving hair, but may catch a little when slicing paper. I'm a bit of a sharpening nut lately as well... I will use the factory edge a little bit doing some stuff around house, like chopping and batoning some campfire wood... but once it's ready to be sharpened, I will usually convex it, ot at the very least, I strop it until all of the machining marks are gone and it's a shiny mirror edge. Enough of this and the edge will micro convex itself anyways. If it's a bigger blade and I was it convexed quickly, I have a WorkSharp, but most blades I do by hand with DMT diamond cards and stropping with black, green, and white compounds.

The shave test to me is holding the knife between my thumb and index finger only and touching my arm. If the hair doesn't pop right off, it's not done yet... taking hair off with a shaving stroke isn't good enough.

Wow. I'm new to sharpening and can hardly keep mine slicing an inch of paper before tearing. Any tips on equipment/technique for a new guy besides finding someone in my area to do it for me?

I use a mouse pad and sand paper when I want a convex edge. Most of my Beckers have this. 2 years ago I couldnt sharpen knives worth a crap. What you need to do is start sharpening knives. After a while you will "get it". 6 months ago I couldnt have put that edge on my BK2 its just a matter of practice I think. A good strop is worth its weight in gold and power tools are a good way to ruin a knife. Thats about all the tips I have. Oh and you can learn everything here.
 
TJ: I'd say start with some cheap kitchen knives or any other knives you have laying around and don't need.
Maybe an old SAK or something. Buy a combo stone coarse/fine and from there on it's learning by doing. Put some sharpie on the edge so that you see where you are removing metal. After a while you'll develop a feeling for the right angle, but the sharpie trick helps alot for the beginning. Or maybe cut out a cardboard triangle with 20° and put it under the knife, so you know what angle is right.
 
I have never put any of my beckers on any stone, sharpening system, or sandpaper but they have all been stropped very well. I get these results easily and even better results with my 11/14 and 16. I honestly think stropping is the key to really getting the perfect edge. i am plannin on getting the kme system soon but all my knives have continued to cut anything i have ever needed to cut with just a strop.

My bk2 came with a very uneven grind near the tip of the blade. That being said it can shave arm hair still. I still have to give it a good edge still. But i dont think im going to try to get the knife scary sharp. I really want to abuse this knife. Cant wait til warmer weather so i can get outside and go camping. Too cold for me in winter time. Burrr
 
Just wanted to add that I sharpened my new BK2 with a Tool Sharp I just picked up. Wow does that thing do a wicked and simple convex edge. If anyone is having problems getting a good edge on their knife I highly recommend the Tool Sharp, just a thought though it will mar up your factory finish but if you intend on using your knife no big deal. Again it was so easy to use even I was able to get great results and I am probably the worst when it comes to new gadgets.
