New BK9 but not sure how to carry

No pix, but I have mine paracorded thrugh the stock sheath holes upside down on a medium/small hydration pack from a now defunct company. To aid with retention in the sheath, I took the plastic liner out of the sheath, heated it in boiling water and sandwiched the middle between a clamp and a couple blocks of wood until it cooled. That along with the stock snap retainer keep it in the sheath just fine.

The BK9 stays in camp on my pack (a good but cheap LAPG pack) in a ‘hunkachunka’ (a BF forums member/maker) with a pony sheath for the BK13 Remora. Should I decide to carry w/o the pack, I use a NIXLeather scout (middle 2nd pic, w/o the ret. strap) or a Skystorm belt drop (bottom 2nd pic.) (both BF members and sellers) All are top quality sheaths.:thumbup:

I have actually had this knife for a few months, got sick, had surgery etc and just now getting back to "normal". So basically i have not used this knife yet. I do know that i cannot stand to carry this long knife on the hip so my question to you fellas is, how do you carry your BK9 in sheath? if you have it strapped to your back pack please post pics. i have a Mini Falcon II and i have yet to figure out how to strap that long motha on there. any ideas and etc would be greatful

Glad you're getting better. I can't help but wonder if a better designed sheath (more comfortable) would make it easier to carry on you hip? I haven't modded a factory one but I'm sure it could be done and I'd probably either sew some straps onto it or add some grommets to the existing fabric somehow. Not much help there but I do make Kydex sheaths and have the same knife and pack as you do so I've got some pics/ideas for ya.

I like to switch back and forth between "choppers" which for me includes a 12" machete (either Ontario or Gavilan) and a Junglas or BK-9. So I've designed a "Universal" Machete Sheath that let's me switch back and forth, this is also a pretty cost effective route cause you end up buying just one machete.

Not pack mounted but you get the idea:

To be perfectly honest you can take any Kydex sheath (even a bad one) and mount Tek-Loks to it as long as the holes are spaced correctly. Here's a picture of two of mine for reference with the holes spaced for Tek-Loks:

Here's a pic of the BK7 sheath from above mounted to a pack.... notice it still has the belt loop attached so it can be swapped easily:

Here's a picture of a BK7 with a "Dangler", I also make a belt-loop that snaps onto the ring so it can be carried with a baldric sling or go from your belt to a pack really quickly:

The Dangler allows for alot of movement so you hardly know it's there when walking around with it.

Here's the same setup belt-mounted from three different angles:

And another shot of it in "all of it's glory" the pouch-sheath is my design as well and it can be removed and used by itself.. .also that's a BK14 and there's plenty of cant to it so even with scales it'll deploy really easily.

Hope this helps to give you some ideas and again glad to hear your recovering well.

very nice posts guys thanks a ton. this does give me better ideas on how i need to do this. i am going to tinker more with the falcon 2 (mini) and the BK9. i may need to get another sheath but i am hoping i do not.

the main reason why i cannot stand carrying long knives on the hip is that its too much weight to one side. when on long walks and climbing hills it gets irritating. so pack carry (but easy to get at if needed) is the best route imo.

Awesome. Let us know how you decide to go, I'm interested in what you come up with. I usually pack carry mine as well, with a smaller knife on my belt. But, with this new Azwelke sheath I got, I'll be sportin' it on my belt for a while. :D

will do bud. might have to check that sheath out too... only downside is that i am flat broke due to med bills and lots of em. i need to go camping somethin' awful!

Since the last pictures I posted I made a "quick & dirty" sheath for the Haze/BK9 that I'm finishing up a review for. I made this late at night last Friday.... actually fell asleep while working on it and the pen marks are still on it, needs sanding etc. Anyhow, I figured this would make a great pack knife and since it's not mine... but I also don't have a "customer" to spec it out for I figured I'd just have fun with it. It's gonna look a little more like a Kydex "John Holmes" sheath with a second pouch above the first one.... I can fit an ESEE Firekit and a SOG multi-tool in one of the pouches so whoever has/gets/uses this setup will have everything from navigation, cordage and fire covered with one pack mounted sheath.

A belt loop and thigh-strap can always be added too. Already posted this elsewhere but here's the "rough" version of it.

Do post whatever you come up with here... be nice to see how you approach it and definitely get out camping. Just make it happen...even if it's a half hour from home, it'll add some more time onto your life and you might end up having the time of your life.

edited to add:

Where it's mounted on the pack I can reach back with my right hand and pull it out no problem.... and even put it back. If it was mine I'd probably put 1-2 more Molle-Loks but it held fine with two small ones opposite eachother (top and bottom).

I recently bought a bk9 and here's how I came up with carrying it, and keeping it handy to use.
IMG_5350.jpg

I tied a small loop of paracord through the two holes at the bottom. I used a keychain carabiner to clip that to a loop on the shoulder strap for my backpack. I then put the backpack's belt through the belt loop on the sheath. It hangs upside down, stays in and is easy to get out and put back.
