I got my Blind Horse Knives Large Cascade (an exclusive design for knivesshipfree.com) this weekend, and I absolutely love this knife already. There was virtually nothing available in the way of reviews, images, etc. to help me make a decision on this purchase, other than the reputation of BHK having very ergonimic designs.

This knife came shaving sharp, and the fit and finish is 2nd to none. The best part is the feel of the knife in my hand. I recently got a Bravo 1 which also feels amazing, but this is a completely different feel. It fits so naturally in the palm, and any grip is just perfect.

The only downside is the slick finish which I wish could be matte. Any suggestions on making the finish less slick without making it look like crap?

Here are the specs from knivesshipfree:

  • Steel: D2
  • Thickness: 3/16"
  • OAL: 8.25
  • Blade: 3.75"
  • Weight: 6.5 oz.

The only thing that seemed to be different on mine from the specs is the blade thickness. Mine is a little over 1/8" thick, but definitely under the advertised 3/16" thick. (see below pic) And actually for a knife of this size, the blade thickness is perfect.

Since I didn't see much out there in the way of initial impressions or reviews, here are some pics to help if you are considering a BHK bushcraft knife. Now that I got all these nice pics of it in pristine condition, I need to go out in the woods and see what it's got!

Great first look! I was thinking about getting one of those, and now it looks like it's gonna be on my list. Thanks!

Thats a beauty, congrats & thanks for the heads up.
If you mean the slickness of the handle,do you want to make it more grippy,or just less shiny?Sand paper, scotchbrite & steelwool will all work to different degrees.

It just came out about two weeks ago so you are one of the first to have one.

Bigger than I imagined ... very nice!

BHK makes a great product!

I came back to this thread and noticed you added some more photos, very yummy looking knife!

You probably just sold at least 10 of them.

Thanks for doing the review. They are really nice knives. I have been impressed with all of my dealings with BHK.

:)

I mainly want it to be less shiny, so a matte finish. I'm hoping that will make it more grippy when my hands are cold/dry. What's a safe method to start with to take away the shine? Scotchbright? I can always go to the next level if I need it to be more grippy.

very nice pics! i just ordered my first bhk actually without even seeing one in person, the regular bushcrafter. should be here by tuesday.

I'd start with 000 steelwool & work my way up untill it's rough enough.(the lower the # the finer the fiber of steelwool, you can use it as fire tinder too.)
Scotchbrite will work fine if thats all you have on hand.
And put some tape on the blade if you're worried about scratching it.:)

Thanks JV3. Great choice on the BHK Bushcrafter from what I've read. That knife as well as the Bushbaby are two other BHK knives I'll own at some point.

Thank much for the info Mykel. I'll pick up some 000 steel wool and give that a shot. Thanks for the tip on taping the blade too. I wouldn't have thought of that.

I'll post some "after" pics once I get the matte finish to my liking.

For the matte I'd go start at 220 or lower grit. I don't feel like any higher grit will really give you the feel you are going for.

And.... if you don't like it just sand back up to about 220 or 400 and then hit it for 30 seconds on a buffing wheel with white compound and you are right back to where you started.

Awesome looking knife....and D2 steel.

I have the regular BHK Bushcrafter with scandi grind and O-1 steel. Great little knifes

I love the BHK's - the guys over there are top shelf too - made in America - what more could you ask for?????

What do you think of the sheath?

rob

Don't like it. It's a SSSS. Good quality but I'm so used to having an in house BHK sheath made by Judy or a JRE that this one looks foreign. Think I'd prefer a JRE Bushcrafter sheath with this knife or a BHK kydex/leather rig like on the Pathfinder.

+1 I prefer the look of most of the sheaths I've seen BHK use.
