Got to play with one of these new babies today! i just happened to walk into my local knife store and they had just received it. Real nice knife, but I personally don't like the color. Anyway, you can see a picture of it at gpknives.com

I went to check Benchmade Forum and saw the pics. It looks great. Can't wait to handle it.

www.gpknives.com has them for $103.95.
I'm waiting for the 730BT black handle.
I hope.

Wow! What a great looking knive, I love the maroon handle. Who's got any specs (blade lenght, handle, total)? I can't find any at BM. Better question, beside the one mentioned, who's got them to sell!

Thought I would post the pictures here. this looks really good. I will have to get a satin finish, plain edge when they become available. I dont really see where it is based on the Ares though.

Someone on the F/S forum said that his (pre-production version) has a 5" handle and a 3.5" blade. Terrible ratio if you ask me.

You're right. hat looks nothing like ther Ares. I's as if Benchmade decided to just use the NAME, "Ares". What gives???

Also, does it look to anyone else like there's some sort of a cut around the lock mechanism?

Howie

Yes, there is a cut out around the lock release button. The knife handled OK. Felt alot like my Stryker (full size) The action was smooth to open with the thumb. I don't own an AXIS lock knife so I'm not proficient at opening it as I would call it "free blade" (Using the button to flick the blade out). But, the knife store owner was whipping it out with ease. Grand Prairie Knives (gpknives.com) did not receive a name for it, so I dont know if it is indeed called "Ares". Seemed an OK knife for the price, I personally didn't like the color. Just my opinion.

Hope this helps. chieftd

There is a recessed area around the lock as well as the butt/clip attachment area. The handles are "sculpted", not flat like every other G-10 knife Benchmade has made.
It measures nearly the same as a large Sebenza.

I just heard from Grand Prairie Knives. The blade is 3.5" and it is currently available only in the combination blade. Too bas, as I will NOT buy another combi blade knife! I like everything else about it.

What's up with the thumbstud. It also loks different from the other BM studs. Am i right? Can someone describe it better, as I probably won't get to see one unless I order it, which I don't like doing without seeingsomething first. I wanna live where you guys do!

Howie

Howie -- I agree -- the stud looks distinctly different. Like a lug nut rather than a tapered stud.

I will have to agree on the "waiting until there is a version out without comboedge" thing. *sigh* When will people learn...

The pix on the gpknives website make it look like the handle is monstrous, but Dakota's pix do not. Probably just foreshortening from the angled shot.

I was thinking that this one was going to be the "Aries" rather than the "Ares" ??? Where's our Benchmade rep anyways...

The more I look at it, the more disappointed I get. I think Benchmade tried too hard this time. This looks NOTHING like the Ares, and has no right to be deemed so. They could have taken the Ares, put an Axis Lock on it, and BOOM! Great knife! But no... "I've got a better idea... Lets give it a false edge... and take away that silly choil!" "Yea, but that's not enough. We gotta change it as much as we possibly can. Hmm. Let's change the handle shape, and give it swirls! And we can't give it our standard stud. No, we gotta make this look funny! And let's take some material away from around the lock! And some more at the butt of the handle!"
Here's an idea: NO! Let's NOT do that! Let's make an Ares with a friggin Axis Lock! JEEEZ!!! Come on Benchmade. Let's fo it right.

Sorry I sound pissed. It's 'cuz I am. I wasn't before; I was just bewildered that they could mutate such a good looking knife. So if someone in the know could answer my question about the stud (yea, it does look like some sort of a lug), that would be great. Are we going to see it in black? That might almost save it, though it's doubtful.

Thanks
Howie

Hehehe, relax there Howie. Chances are Mr. Elishewitz had every bit as much to do with that as BM did. I doubt it's a situation where they took a design and then mangled it (but then I wouldn't call it 'mangled' anyway, I like it).

Personally, I think it's a heckuvalot more interesting than the previous collaborations although it does remind me a bit like the Sentinel/Darkstar. In fact, if I were to ask for a Sentinel with the Axis-Lock, this one would make me nice and happy. 8)

I like it. I think it just made my list of "must buy". Don't know about the combo-blade. But, by the time it makes it to the top of my list to buy, they'll probably have a plain blade.

Howie: let's remember that this is designed by Allen Elishewitz, and the name is part of the design.

RE: the thumbstud, They have the exact same profile as the other axis lock knives, they look slightly diferent because they now have a torx cut in the end rather than two small holes around the diameter for tightening.

RE: Blade to handle ratio, check out the Benchmade forum for comparison pics to a sebenza.

If any one is interested, gpknives.com, like the above post mentioned, has some of the pre-production models left.

I went ahead and ordered one, should have it early next week. I'll post my thoughts then.

I agree though, the picture posted here and the two pictures at gpknives make it seem like there are two different blade lengths. I'm anxious to find out anyways. So tired of plain black G-10!
