Hey all. I was in Costco today and picked up Les Stroud's new book "Survive!".
I haven't really got into it, but what I have read intrigues me. The book is 350 pages and is divided into 15 chapters, published in 2008. It has black and white photographs throughout and seems to be written in Les's "instructive yet informal" style. It has sections on trip planning, psych aspects of survival, water, shelter, food, weather, clothing, first aid etc. What got me were the detailed pictures of shelter and trap construction (figure 4, deadfall etc.), fire making (fireboard, friction fire, char cloth etc.), signalling, navigation. It covers a range of environments, but seems mostly geared towards boreal forest/northern woods survival, with some arctic, jungle and coastal stuff too. The book seems fairly complete for its size and I only paid $13 Can for it! As I read it, I'll let you know what I think. I'm by no means an expert on any of this stuff, but it looks like a good read so far!

That's good to know, I wouldn't mind picking that one up .

If it was $13 canadian for you it will be about $8.00 USD for me :D

Its about About $16 Canadian at Amazon.ca.
I have it in my Amazon wishlist but if i can get to Costco first i'll pick it up.
Watched the first Survivorman season 3 episode last night as well.
Woohoo something to look forward to, how many episodes this season i wonder?

I actually had a chance to skim through it as reported here. Like I said there, there isn't really anything new, but I thought it was done better than a lot of them.

I plan to pick up a copy to add to the library. Good job, Les.

Doc, at 350 pages, would you say it's a good overall view A to Z?
Perhaps a good primer that covers all topics?

All text, or illustrated?

I'm going to look for it at Sam's Club (not a member of CostCo.)

What's a SkunkWerX? Sounds familiar .

Hey Skunk, good to see you back here.

I can't say if it is a good A-Z survival book. When I looked at it, it wasn't from the point of view of a book report, but rather just a quick scan. What I saw, I certainly wouldn't take exception to and I rather liked it. Certainly, for the price, I'll be including it on the shelf. There is text and photos.

If I'm back out there, this week, I'll take another look and report back.

BTW, how's the knife making coming?

Doc

I got this book yesterday. I haven't had a chance to read the whole thing, but it looks very well done.

Picked it up from Barnes and noble, its one of the better books out there great read.

I just got a copy of this in the mail yesterday. I got it in the for sale forum here pretty cheap. I haven't even cracked it open yet.

I got my Amazon order this week, it included Strouds "Survive!" and Ray Mears "Essential Bushcraft".
Once i'm clear of exams i'll get to read them both!
:)
