Hey all. I was in Costco today and picked up Les Stroud's new book "Survive!".
I haven't really got into it, but what I have read intrigues me. The book is 350 pages and is divided into 15 chapters, published in 2008. It has black and white photographs throughout and seems to be written in Les's "instructive yet informal" style. It has sections on trip planning, psych aspects of survival, water, shelter, food, weather, clothing, first aid etc. What got me were the detailed pictures of shelter and trap construction (figure 4, deadfall etc.), fire making (fireboard, friction fire, char cloth etc.), signalling, navigation. It covers a range of environments, but seems mostly geared towards boreal forest/northern woods survival, with some arctic, jungle and coastal stuff too. The book seems fairly complete for its size and I only paid $13 Can for it! As I read it, I'll let you know what I think. I'm by no means an expert on any of this stuff, but it looks like a good read so far!
