New Brand! Accipiter Knife and Tool!

Hi Folks,

I just posted a quick video with another tatami mat. The Sharp Shin penetrates very well, even in a horizontal, cross-grain orientation.

The Goshawk on the other hand isn’t quite as pokey as I’d like. You can see that it pushes the target quite a bit with moderate strikes.

To correct for this issue, I plan to lower the point slightly on the production version. This will create both a better point presentation angle and a narrower point profile (as seen from the side - the tip will still be extra-thick from seen from above).

This change will also lighten the knife by maybe an ounce from the current weight of ~18oz.

Here’s a picture using a towel to demonstrate roughly what the new profile will look like:

As expected, the guarded handle shapes made my fingers feel extremely safe during this process. 👌

What about putting a sharpened swedge a few inches long? (On the original profile)
That would make it more pokey

Shawn, if I may, it wouldn’t hurt to edit the post and put the current profile next to the after/towel pic so a direct comparison can be made without pic hunting.

It would 100%

BUT I’m in love with the thick point geometry that these have. :)

Here’s a comparison with my favorite other larger blades, and you can see that from the top, the tip profiles of the both of the Accipiters are more stout than the others (which are all in thicker stock as well). The Bowie on the left has a swedge, and the tip is very pointy but I’m concerned that it’s a little delicate for hard use in the woods. (I wouldn’t use it to drill or dig for fat wood with it for instance).

I’d rather make my pokey gains from side profile and keep the stout tips.
