New bridge in France

Very cool bridge! There is one that uses the same cable-stayed architecture in Virginia, on I-295 over the James River just east of Richmond. Because there is no superstructure outside of the roadway like there is on a suspension bridge, you get this eery feeling of driving along a platform suspended in space.

Conquering France? What is it? a bridge to the 18th century? How would something like that work?
No, those are the bridges across the Potomac River from Washington, DC, and from Maryland to Virginia. They go from the 21st Century to the 19th, 18th, or even the 17th Centuries, depending upon your political point of view. :D :D
BTW, that joke is used by Virginians of all political stripes, some with irritation and frustration, some with great pride, and some with a mixture of both.

I hope the French have better luck with this bridge than they did with that new passenger terminal at CDG airport.

PS: I think some of my ancestors worked on the Tay Bridge.

PPS: I want to see the design of the new bridge over the Staits of Messina, connecting Italy to Sicily.

I drove past this bridge in August, before it opened. It was a real pain coming off the motorway and crawling down into the valley, through a string of villages and small towns, then back up the other side. The bridge will save about half an hour's driving.

Wasn't I.K. Brunel half French? Wasn't his engineer father French? Seriously, I'm pleased the architect was British!

Actually, I don't know about French engineers but they have some bloody good mechanics. Better than the "(sharp intake of breath) bring it back next week and I'll have a look at it" attitude over here.

Andrew.
